His luck was absolutely rotten - he failed to finish 15 of 31 races due to crashes and engine failures - but when the car held up, he was always a threat to win, and could've been a title contender. 5. larry posted: 10.20.2005 - 1:17 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Spencers first pole 6. Only Rusty Wallace and Ernie Irvan led more laps. However, he had a lot of misfortune that year to go along with his strong racecars. 9. Thomas posted: 02.06.2007 - 7:37 am Rate this comment: (2) (1) He would have won the title if it weren't for all the crashes and engine failures and other stupid stuff, like the aforementioned Hoosier tires, which failed on occasion and his brother Brett wiping him out while he was leading the freakin' Brickyard 400 at Indy. I guess that's why Geoff and Todd stayed competitive in their respective series for quite some time, leading to a truck championship for Todd, and also why Brett is now a NA$CAR official in charge of "cost management." This just shows that racing is a parallel to the real world since stupid, corrupt people usually end up being government officials, and C-students in high school end up being cops in some places. It's too bad, I liked Brett before he went to the dark side of racing. 11. Anonymous posted: 09.03.2007 - 9:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Harry Gant's 8th DNF 12. That's what seperated Alan Kulwicki from Bodine. Kulwicki would have solved the engine problems and would not have crashed as much as Bodine. 22. jp posted: 03.22.2012 - 9:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I love North Wilkesboro, but this was one God-awful race...... 23. It was a shame his career ended when it did. Didn't even get to defend his title. 24. He wasn't just a Hoosier driver, he worked with Hooiser testing their race tire, which is why he was so much faster than the other hosier drivers that year.n But after the 94 season nascar passed the "protect big goodyear" rule, stipulating that any tire manufacturer competing in cup must supply enough tires to meet the needs of every team in the field, forcing Hoosier, which consisted of 18 employees at the time, to withdraw. When he returned to Goodyear not only had Bodine lost his Hoosier advantage, he was then playing catchup on the goodyears. 26. Jolly Mean Giant posted: 09.14.2017 - 9:24 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Although the race went green a whopping 329 laps before the first caution (they saved all the cautions for the very tail end of this one), there was actually one incident early on in the race around the 50 lap mark-Greg Sacks blew a tire coming off the second corner and slammed the wall hard off the corner, pancaking the right side of the #77. Surprisingly there was no yellow thrown for this (nowadays there is no way there wouldn't have been one thrown immediately for that), and Sacks was able to limp his way to the pits and to the garage. He eventually returned to the race over 130 laps down missing the hood and the right front fender. 31. RaceFanX posted: 11.28.2018 - 10:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) After a disappointing run at Martinsville, where driver error and a flat tire cost him the race, Geoff Bodine comes to North Wilkesboro driving the exact same Ford Thunderbird from his fleet and delivers an old school butt kickin' like the kind we'll likely never see again. 32. Jimnsimforever posted: 02.23.2019 - 9:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) At this point in time, in 36 car fields, did any fan ever think it was weird that over half of the fields were related to other drivers in the field. That's just the well known brother packs. The lesser known ones were invading Busch Series and about to jump in the trucks too. You could've had 5 on 5 old school survivor series elimination matches with all 3 Bodines and the Burton bros vs all 3 Wallaces and the Labonte bros. The Waltrip bros would serve as special referee and time keeper. During the match the Green bros would do a run-in with steel chairs, and the Sadler bros would provide commentary with their awesome accents. Can't think of anything for the father/son combo's to do, or the Sauters. 33. Jimnsimforever posted: 02.23.2019 - 10:57 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Make no mistake about it, Geoff Bodine had a fast car. But if it had been up to Geoff the driver/car owner in this race, he definitely wouldn't have lapped the field and you never know, may not have won the race either. The only reason he was on a lap by himself is because his crew begged and pleaded with him to stay out until 69 laps left and he could make it on one more stop. They talked him into it and sure enough 2 laps before he was going to come in the first caution of the day comes out. Had they listened to Geoff who kept saying I'm coming in to get 4 tires, mine are worn too bad, he'd have still come out the leader. But when that caution came out he'd have been having to fight off 4 other cars right on his butt that would've been back on the lead lap after he also pitted during the green flag for four tires like they did. They all could've come right back in for more fresh rubber with not much to lose under that caution to try and keep up with Geoff or pass him too. 34. nohbody posted: 07.11.2019 - 11:27 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @25 That tire rule was instituted in 1988, Hoosier's first year. As for Bodine, it was a fluke season, never before or again was he this competitive. It had nothing to do with the tires. 35.
