Here, he wins at Rockingham in a great finish w/ Rick Mast, and locks up his 7th Winston Cup championship, tying Richard Petty for the most. I really think that if the Daytona incident in 2001 had not occured, he would have been an 8 time Winston Cup champion. 2. They obviously didn't know Earnhardt very well, because he didn't back off for even a lap. 3. Also, Jeff Gordon looked to have the car to beat until he suffered a mechanical problem. Ken Schrader also had a car capable of winning, but his driveshaft came out from under his car and several cars ran over it, causing a muti-car crash. 11. He almost killed Rusty Wallace at Talladega in 1993. He was the Ty Cobb of NASCAR. He went over the edge to win just like Cobb and was booed like hell by half the fans in the stands, more than than half when he dumped someone for a cheap win. Earnhardt never won a Most Popular Diver of the Year Award in the 1980's to 1997 because of his dirty driving. The only reason he won in 1998 was because Bill Elliott withdrew his name from consideration. Earnhardt failed to repeat in 1999 after wrecking Terry Labonte at Bristol. 32. wrank fakefield posted: 07.20.2014 - 2:39 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Earnhardt's best season as a driver. He had years where he won more races and led more laps, but in my opinion he never had a year where he maximized his car's potential more, or minimized adversity more. Who knows what woulda happened if Ernie irvan hadn't gotten hurt, but to me Earnhardt's 1994 was like Ayrton Senna's 1993: we never saw either's talents on greater display, whether or not there were faster cars in the field. And just for the record, in 1994 i was an extremely frustrated Rusty Wallace fan. I'm just giving credit where credit is due. 33. Sean posted: 04.27.2015 - 10:44 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) That's a bizarre comparison. Bodine comes a lot closer to Kulwicki in skill than Dillon comes to Earnhardt. In fact, I honestly can't decide between Bodine and Kulwicki and actually lean towards Bodine. Having said that, Kulwicki was much easier to like. 36. Sean posted: 04.27.2015 - 10:45 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) Yes, Kulwicki won a title and Bodine's years were miserably inconsistent, but he was a lot faster and a lot more dominant as an owner-driver to compensate for that. I guess I think Bodine was a better driver than Kulwicki, but Kulwicki was a WAY better team manager/engineer... Bodine could do just one thing well, while Kulwicki could do a bunch of things well, enough to compensate for Bodine's greater speed. Still, comparing that to Dillon vs. Earnhardt. Wow... 37. Sean posted: 04.27.2015 - 10:48 pm Rate this comment: (1) (2) Honestly it's a lot more offensive to me that one of the biggest underachieving car owners Felix Sabates (based on the money he put in and how little he got out of it) effectively got to manage the #7 team after Kulwicki's death before Bodine bought it. The way I see it, Sabates was already running the team into the ground before Bodine got there... 38. Walleye before you do anything you really need to lose your virginity. Secondly, you need to get your facts straight. It was 2001 when Elliott pulled his name out which was a classy thing to do. You either loved him or hated him, but everyone respected him. Half the people cheered and half the people booed. He didn't take 76 people out to win all his races. He may have a handful at the most. He raced hard and had a competitve edge with his abilities over everyone else. What's wrong with giving %100? As much as you talk about him on this site it basically shows your repsect for him because what he did to you mentally. 39. I don't like it when I see people who I know good and well didn't watch races detail for detail during the 80's and 90's and over exaggerate that Dale won 100% of his races by wrecking someone. It's ridiculous. He drove hard and was aggressive at times. Big deal. It's racing. 100% of the time if he did bump someone or wreck someone it didn't have an outcome on the championship standings. However, in 1989 and 1995 he was in a couple of wrecks that was caused by other drivers that cost him the title. 46. And how did nobody in the directors truck or stat man or anyone correct him? They took callers questions and answered them on TNN through the broadcast and one asked the question, Who has the most titles after Earnhardt and Petty with 7? Mike Joy continually said there are 3 men with 3, Lee Petty, David Pearson, and Cale Yarborough. He then kept repeating it and nobody ever corrected him to say there were 4, that good ole DW had 3 as well. Didn't even pop in his head when DW crashed out to end the longest active races without a DNF streak at 40 there at the end. 50.
