It was his final race and mechanical trouble sidelined his Skoal Bandit Chevy for the last time. 2. je24go posted: 05.11.2005 - 6:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) You are correct, HomeDepot. 3. However, for (maybe) the first special paint schemes you have to go back a few years to the 1991 Daytona 500 where five cars paid tribute to U.S. troops in Desert Storm by each running a scheme with an armed forces branch on it: #7 Alan Kulwicki (Army), #18 Greg Sacks (Navy), #24 Mickey Gibbs (Air Force), #71 Dave Marcis (Coast Guard), and #88 Buddy Baker (Marines). (Thanks, Jayski.com) This idea was brought back in 2000 for the Coca-Cola 600 on Memorial Day weekend. As for the 1995 extremely sought after Silver Select scheme for die-cast collectors, this car gets the credit for being the first special, one-time paint scheme because: it had the hype before the race, Dale Earnhardt's connection with Action got the die-cast world to back it, the car had a wild exit when it crashed in the final segment of The Winston, one of NASCAR's most famous paint schemes had a new look, and of course a big name was connected with it. 7. Todd Bodine's 3rd place finish is his best ever in Cup. Derrike Cope finished 7th, his best result of 1994. "Super Sub" Kenny Wallace secured his first Top 5 start in qualifying. Of course, NASCAR, with its infinite wisdom, banned the car from competing because of its "controversial" sponsor. I believe the team then entered the ARCA race and met the same fate. Such a shame to lose Gray, a great longtime underdog car owner. The team announced they were entering a full season & the Rookie Of The Year competition with this sponsor/driver combo for 1995 but when NA$CAR nixed it, they closed up shop for good. I dont know if the car ever even made a practice lap or allowed on track but it should be listed as a "withdrew" at the very least in the DNQ section. 30. HOWEVER-the first special paint scheme was run by David Pearson in 1968. He ran the car all gold instead of blue and gold in honor of Ford's 50th anniversary. Morgan Shephard ran a special paint scheme in 1993 (I forget the exact race, there is a photo of it in the 1993 Yearbook) and Brett Bodine ran several special hoods in the 1994 season.
