Speeds were high and the cars gripped extremely well in the corners, leading to many drivers driving over their heads. There were many accidents as a result. 2. On a restart, he tapped Michael Waltrip, which sent both cars to the inside wall and collected Rusty Wallace. Wallace's car "climbed" a bit on Martin's car. Waltrip later would say ... "I got clobbered and now I'm running dead last with a car all tore to hell," but he still managed to somehow recover to finish seventh. Twenty-eight of the fourty-two starts in this event were caught up in an accident. Definitely a case of the Lady in Black striking back ... 4. I think I read somewhere about them shorting the spring race to 400 miles to shorten it. This was the first race since they shortened it back, and because of all the cautions, it actually took longer to run than the TranSouth 500 the year before. That, my friends, is a demolition derby. 6. Mr. Etc posted: 07.22.2006 - 4:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 2nd shortened race, 94 was as well; and lol @ billy standridge in 14th. 7. I think the article I read said it took longer to run than the last Transouth 500, but that was in '93, so it took longer than that race. Whatever it said, this was a crazy race, by all means. 9. Also Morgan-McClure Morotsports' 10th victory. 10. biffle16 posted: 12.25.2006 - 11:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (6) Joke of a race. 11. J. Kircher posted: 01.11.2009 - 5:49 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) Just got done watching the whole race today on YouTube. The race was a few months before I started watching NASCAR and it just serves as a reminder of how great the TV coverage used to be and how much better the sport used to be. Anyway, besides it being a crazy race there were a few lighter moments. During one of the lengthier cautions, Benny Parsons talked to a few of the drivers as they were running behind the pace car and after a few questions with Darrell Waltrip, he let ol' DW toss it to commercial break. The other moment was alluded to earlier about Kyle Petty. Kyle said he hated Darlington and Bristol (which is where they were racing the next week) and said they should flood this place with water and stock it with fish and let the fans watch a professional fishing tournament from the stands. But as bad as this place is, they could stock it with a million fish and no one would ever catch anything! 17. 18fan posted: 02.27.2010 - 1:02 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) To be fair, Michael Waltrip finished seventh because he was off the pace and missed the big wrecks. 18. Anonymous posted: 08.14.2010 - 11:58 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) To be fair, he was on the lead lap in the top 15 the whole race long, even after crashing. 19. Anonymous posted: 08.15.2010 - 12:40 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Waltrip wasn't even close to being off the pace. He was 4th with 50 laps to go and was side by side at the line with Grissom after starting at the very back on the final restart. 20. Schroeder51 posted: 09.11.2010 - 9:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A bunch of crashes in this one. It all started when Joe Nemechek got up high in turn 1 and smacked the wall. Greg Sacks brought out the next caution when he spun in turn 3. Shortly after that Robert Pressley lost control in turns 1 and 2 while running in the top 5 and backed into the wall. No caution came out. Shortly after that Chuck Bown blew a tire and pounded the wall in turns 1 and 2. On the restart, Mark Martin got into the back of Michael Waltrip and spun Waltrip out. This caused an unusual accident where Martin's car ended up against the inside wall with Rusty Wallace stuck on top of him. After these four early cautions a fairly lengthy green flag run set in. Right before the fifth caution came out, Jeremy Mayfield, who had stayed out earlier and led some laps, got loose and smacked the turn 3 wall. He was almost run over by Todd Bodine on his way to the pits. His brake rotor caught on fire in the pits. The fifth caution came out when Ward Burton, who was running in the top 10, tangled with the slower lapped car of Steve Kinser. Both cars spun, Ward spun into the side of Ricky Rudd, who went head on into the inside wall. Bobby Labonte spun trying to avoid the accident. Shortly after the restart, Jimmy Spencer spun Jeff Burton in turn 2, collecting Lake Speed and Dale Jarrett. Geoff Bodine lost it in turn 4 and made contact with Terry Labonte and the wall. Bodine went to the pits, Labonte continued for a few more laps until he spun on the frontstretch and crashed, bringing out the caution again. Greg Sacks brought out another caution when he spun in between turns 1 and 2. The race went green for a while after that, until Darrell Waltrip lost it and backed into the turn 3 wall. They went green for another while after that until Loy Allen lost it coming off of turn 4 and slammed the frontstretch wall. Kyle Petty lost it in between turns 3 and 4 and collected Bill Elliott. Petty made his comment about filling Darlington up with water and stocking it with fish during his interview. On the restart Bobby Labonte got into the back of the lapped car of Randy Lajoie and spun him going into 1, collecting and ending the day of dominant Jeff Gordon. Jimmy Spencer, already over 100 laps down, brought out the 13th caution when he spun coming onto the backstretch. A few laps after the restart, the lapped car of Billy Standridge spun Rick Mast in turn 2, collecting Bobby Labonte, Dick Trickle, and Jeff Burton. Labonte broke his shoulder blade after Trickle plowed into him in the crash. The 15th and final caution came out when Brett Bodine and Davy Jones collided in between turns 1 and 2. Contrary to what the results show here, Jones actually did not finish this race. 21. Breaker posted: 10.15.2010 - 10:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Schroeder51 ... I did not actually see this race, but according to the Official NASCAR Preview and Press Guide 96 (covering the 1995 season) Davy Jones was listed as "running" 22. Schroeder51 posted: 10.20.2010 - 10:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I saw the race on Youtube, and Jones did not return to the track as far as I can remember seeing. He was only 1 lap down when he crashed and since he crashed with 50 laps to go, the only way he could have finished is if he returned to the track on the last lap of the race. 23. 18fan posted: 06.20.2011 - 3:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Waltrip was only competitive after most of the contenders had crashed out, then he was actually competitive for the final two runs only. 24. 18fan posted: 06.21.2011 - 2:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) Michael did not start in the back on the final restart and I think every time he was shown on the ESPN telecast he was either going through a wreck that happened in front of him that took out cars that were ahead of him or when Michael was being passed. 25. jC... posted: 03.13.2012 - 12:24 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I seem to recall at one point Bob Jenkins saying coming back from a commercial break, "Welcome back to championship demolition derby." My Uncle had seats in the upper deck off what was the backstretch before hurricane Hugo took them down. 36. Dodge posted: 09.02.2015 - 3:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Negative. Right up until this race the owner is listed as Joe Horner, then beginning with this race it is listed as Dean Myers, but it looks to be the same team. Both owners have pages on this site but not much information is available about either. 38. They may not have been dominating drivers of the period, but honestly, given the season it took place in I'd say the only actual unusual top ten finishers in this race are Todd Bodine and Steve Grissolm. 40. Randy Lajoie gets punted on a restart, spun backwards, and Gordon hit him nose-to-nose. If that's not awful luck, nothing is. This race was an absolute crash fest from the drop of the green. 42. Jimnsimforever posted: 02.28.2019 - 3:22 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) In the 2nd to last caution the ambulances all went rushing to Rick Mast because everyone was calling them over but Bobby Labonte was the one who was hurt. Bobby I think after the wreck looked like he was partially knocked out and went on auto pilot. He got out of his car and headed to the inside wall and awkwardly slumped over it until pit crew members caught up to him and helped him over. They finally had to call a 3rd ambulance over because 2 other ones were over where Rick Mast had already gotten out of his car and walked away. It reminded me of the Michael Waltrip wreck, years before this one, where he kind of got knocked out and got out and walked aimlessly across the race track without looking before falling down in the grass on the other side. 43. Switching back to professional decorum they started talking about how a rebuild like that showed how important points are. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
