He ran out of gas coming to the checkered flag, and needed to be pushed to victory lane by Michael Waltrip. 2. Quite a thrilling race to watch, even though you can't see much there (and no jumbotrons at the time, either). 3. Also, Rusty had this race in the bag with clearly the best car, but had to pit for fuel with 15 to go. 10. Jarrett's win here in Pocono coincided with Michael Andretti's first IndyCar win of the year on the streets of Toronto (his first since Toronto 1994). Two great second-generation champions following in the tiretracks of their championship winning fathers. And will you stop the "squeal" BS? No one knows who you're talking about. 11. 18fan posted: 03.19.2010 - 11:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rusty seemed to be able to charge from midpack and lead a bunch of laps, then have a mechanical problem. 12. 18fan posted: 06.15.2010 - 8:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bill Elliott's first pole in the #94. 13. Ryan posted: 08.09.2011 - 3:39 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This was a big win for Jarrett because at the time he hadn't been performing very well and there were rumors if he didn't start running better or get a win that Yates would replace him soon, but all the talk went to bed after he won. "And will you stop the "squeal" BS? No one knows who you're talking about." Unfortunately he is talking about Jeremy Mayfield, who drove for his man crush, Cale Yarborough. 14. Interestingly enough, his other 28 wins driving for Robert Yates were in the #88 car. 15. Since peanuts are considered bad luck in racing, the team blamed the machine for their recent bad luck and had the machine removed from the shop. Must have helped! 16. wrank fakefield posted: 08.16.2014 - 9:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wallace not only was the only of the the 3 drivers vying for the win late (along with Jarrett and Gordon) who had to pit, but then he spun out of the tunnel turn after pitting. Though they ended up with nothing to show for it, earlier in the race the #2 crew had pulled off a 16.5 second 4 tire, green flag pit stop. At the time 18 seconds was still considered the gold standard (a standard that had been established by the #2 crew). 17. Elliott's pole was his first of the season, earning him a spot in the 1996 Busch Clash. 18. He also traditionally ran very well at Pocono so he was a very popular sleeper pick heading into the race after a strong qualifying run, but his race was almost over before it began. Ted had some valve issues that got repaired before the green even waved, but they sorted it out and he got running in time for the green and still managed to finish 4th. If they didnt have that issue, I wonder if he would have contended with the other 3 for the win. Johnny Benson, part of the TBS pitcrew, picked Musgrave. Chad Little, Benson's rival in the BGN points later joked in the telecast "Dont ever pick me before a race, Johnny". Robert Pressley's race also was almost over on the pace laps as he too had to pit before the green due to a broken stud and ensuing radiator failure. They fixed that but he would not fare as well when he would get tangled up in the Kenny Wallace crash in the 2nd half of the event 19. Hendrick Motorsports put out a press release before qualifying to confirm that, despite rumors at the time, Ken Schrader would not be leaving the team after the season and would return to the #25 Budweiser Chevrolet for 1996. Schrader promptly went out and qualified fourth, sitting on the provisional pole for a bit, afterward. Ward Burton's weekend ended with him just missing a top-10. It was a nice reversal after it started with the hood flying off his #31 Hardee's Chevrolet during the first practice. Mike Wallace had a run of the mill day and finished 26th here but had a pretty solid week and he won a pair of ARCA races that were on the undercard for this race. Ricky Craven ran this race, and led his first laps, in a backup car. The team's primary #41 Chevrolet got wrecked in a first round qualifying accident. 21. @Statscrash posted: 11.19.2018 - 12:59 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I have an old hero card of Ted Musgrave for the 1996 season and it said the team was expecting to win soon...that didn't pan out unfortunetly. 22. Jimnsimforever posted: 03.07.2019 - 11:57 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Dale Jarrett really did need to get this win. At this time Yates was a stronger team than Gibbs and that's why Jarrett left Gibbs for Yates. It had to be tough for him watching Bobby Labonte go to victory lane a couple of times in the team he helped build while he struggled in one of the very top cars of the time. Leading up to this race Dale's dad Ned would really hammer the point home of what bad luck the 28 team had. And a couple of weeks before this his brother Glenn Jarrett got a little unprofessional in victory lane at Milwaukee after Dale Jarrett won his first Busch race in 4 years. He said something along the lines of, a lot of people have been saying all kinds of bad things about you and this will shut them all up. I don't think winning a Busch race in a car owned by him takes pressure off of performing poorly in the Yates Cup car but can understand feeling the need to come to your brothers defense. 24. Not only the first top ten finish for Cale but also the first career top ten finish for Jeremy Mayfield, who took over the ride one year earlier at this very event as a young rookie. 25.
