Speed was still wearing his helmet and was still in his car. NASCAR gave Waltrip the biggest fine of the time 35,000 dollars if I recall correctly. 3. This was the start of a rare feat as Bobby Labonte won at Michigan and brother Terry was first in a thrilling finish the next week at Bristol. Not often have brothers won in back-to-back outings. This race helped shape the points championship as contenders Mark Martin and Dale Earnhardt had DNF's and Ted Musgrave also had problems but limped to the finish. Musgrave was part of a Bill Elliott being penalized. On the last lap, Elliott ran out of fuel and Musgrave tried to be a good samaritan by pushing his fellow Ford driver to the finish, but the rules say that you cannot aid a driver on the last lap of a race. Elliott was given a one-lap penalty, but because he was the last car on the lead lap anyway he still finished in ninth. Ward Burton and the #31 team parted ways after a great sixth-place run. Burton went to Bill Davis Racing the next week, starting an eight-year relationship. 5. They were exactly the same as the numbers on the old #88 Red Baron Oldsmobile. 7. 18fan posted: 03.19.2010 - 11:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bobby won this one on fuel mileage after out driving Jeff Gordon to win the spring race. 8. Let's face it, Earnhardt didn't know how to drive MIS or was too stubborn to adapt his style to fit the track. MIS rewards a smooth style driver, and Earnhardt would overdrive the corners at MIS and fry his tires. He never won an August race at MIS and only won two June events. Cale was an agreessive driver, but when Cale came to MIS he adpated his driving style, drove smooth laps and won 9 times. 12. wrank fakefield posted: 08.20.2014 - 7:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I'd say if you've won at a track, you know how to drive it.I guess Earnhardt burned the tires up so bad it broke the timing belt... 13. Earnhardt was being interviewed at the time and said that "[Gordon] wasn't too bright". 14. He had begun 1995 with Jimmy Means's #52 team but they split after failing to qualify for the first four races in a row. Bradberry also failed to qualify at Michigan in June before he finally made the race here. 16. Evan posted: 12.31.2019 - 2:16 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) There is footage of a practice crash where Jeff Gordon is out testing the wet track and Dale Earnhardt is being interviewed by Jerry Punch on pit road. Jerry asks Dale about the track and Dale pretty much says "It's too slick" and "safest place is on pit road" and then while Gordon is rounding the track "Earnhardt says if he(Gordon) is smart he'll pull on pit road after this first lap" and then he says "I guess he ain't" after Gordon passes the finish line to start his next lap and then he crashed it in Turn 3 because of all the moisture down there. Veteran experience won that day as talented as Jeff Gordon was he proved that he was human that day. But all wasn't lost, as Jeff still managed to finished third behind the Labonte Brothers, Bobby and Terry. 19. The car was initially built for Dale Jarrett during his time at JGR and Labonte pointed out that DJ hated it while he loved it. After it was retired from competition Labonte bought the car from JGR. Today the vehicle is preserved in its 1995 race winning configuration as the car that represents Bobby Labonte on display at the NASCAR Hall of Fame. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
