A 23rd in the spring caution-fest at Bristol in 1997 would be the closest he'd come. 7. Anonymous posted: 09.14.2007 - 9:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I remember some of this race. Todd Bodine got in the wall and Jeff Burton got involved, triggering a multi-car crash. Bill Elliott also spun his car out and took out Terry Labonte and Mike Wallace later on in the race. Then another crash involved Darrell Waltrip, Greg Sacks, Dick Trickle, Geoffrey Bodine, Loy Allen, Mark Martin, Elton Sawyer, Jeremy Mayfield, and Kyle Petty with about 100 to go. 8. rustyfan posted: 05.09.2008 - 11:55 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Two big crashes in this one.Classic battle between Rusty and Earnhardt. 9. Gordon pitted under caution because he ran over some debris. The next lap the rest of the leaders came worried that they had done the same so Gordon never actually passed Earnhardt on the track. Gordon's car was clearly faster but it would've been great to watch Earnhardt try to hold Gordon off had he stayed in front. 15. If not THE best, one of the best accomplishments in all of motorsports. 4 straight at one of the toughest, most grueling tracks and races ever, including 2 million dollar bonuses won back-to-back. You'll never see anything like that again. The Lady in Black was very, very good to The Kid. 19. Ryan posted: 12.30.2018 - 10:19 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The best? Wow. Jeff was very fortunate to win the 1996 and 1997 races. Yes, he put himself in a position to win. However, Dale Jarrett got into some oil while leading in 1996 when he was racing for the Winston Million Dollar Bonus and crashed. Ernie Irvan was running good and also got into the oil and hit the wall. I remember Hut Stricklin having the run of his life in the 1996 race and the race had a loooong green flag run to end it. Gordon pretty much about wrecked himself and Jeff Burton to win in 1997 on the last lap (I realize it was for a million dollars). He wasn't as dominant at Darlington when other teams caught up with Hendrick in resources and the super fast pit crew they had after 1998 and of course after Ray Evernham left in 1999. He's still behind the two best drivers the sport has seen in wins at Darlington and always will be. 20. Let's not pretend that to win a race you have to have some luck fall your way, some less than others, some more. I could come up with a long list of dubs Earnhardt got based on timely cautions or other competitors having problems. 21. I didn't know Morgan Shepherd missed driver introductions but he was a lap down I think a one point and also led a lap at one point I think on an off-cycle pit sequence. He finished in 10th or 11th spot in this race. 23. Chase9Fan posted: 05.15.2020 - 7:03 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rusty's last real run at getting a Southern 500 victory. Wasn't to be for him though he ran this track pretty well without a victory. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
