However, Ernie Irvan, mad his first Winston Cup race since he was injured in 1994. He led 108 laps and finished 6th. 2. I wonder if Yates picked 88 as his number b/c of his former association & fonded of the famous 88 Digard machine? 9. This race was definately one of those feel-good moments. 11. RaceFanX posted: 12.16.2008 - 10:27 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Irvan's car was painted almost a reverse of Dale Jarrett's #28. Both Havoline Fords were black but while the #28 had orange numbers and yellow trim, Ernie's #88 had yellow numbers and orange trim. 12. I have the 1995 NASCAR Winston Cup Yearbook put out by UMI Publications. It says that he drove a Pontiac. 14. 18fan posted: 03.19.2010 - 11:44 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Every car finished the 1996 running of this race as well. 15. I remember hearing about Ernie's wreck at Michigan and that he had a 5% chance of surviving. I went into the same hoping routine I went through a year before that when I found out Davey was in grave condition. This time Ernie made it, and that was a HUGE relief. But to see him race again was amazing. The track gave out foam fingers saying "Ernie Is Back". I kept mine on my bedpost for a long time. I wish like hell I still had it. I have no idea what happened to it. 16. Ryan posted: 08.01.2011 - 4:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Earnhardt 302 points down with 4 races left and only loses by 34... I wanted in the worst way for Irvan to win, even though I was an Earnhardt fan. 18. 18fan posted: 12.17.2012 - 7:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Dale Earnhardt was on pit road when Dick Trickle had a problem and Earnhardt drove through pit road without making his stop, but the caution never came out and he had to come back in. Dale had also dropped a cylinder a few laps earlier. Ricky Rudd had a chance to win but was called back down pit road after his final pit stop for a missing lug nut, costing him a shot at the win. Rudd and his team were adamant that all of the lug nuts were tight. The incident with Rudd is what led to RCR painting the lug nuts red at Rockingham and the controversy that ensued in that race. This race was also one of the first ones with the new rule that allowed only 2 air wrenches over the wall, which is still in place. Several cars had to make unscheduled pit stops due to vibrations from loose wheels. 19. Martin's win here in a Thunderbird also marked the last Cup victory at this track for a Ford driver. Martin would get to visit North Wilkesboro's victory lane one more time before the track closed though, he won a NASCAR Truck series race here in 1996 on the track's last weekend of operations. 22. Only a few of the early comments are showing up for all the races starting from the following one at Charlotte up until the spring Cup race at Bristol in early 1996 with the comment box itself also not appearing. Other series don't appear to have this issue but it seems a lot of the early to mid 1990s NASCAR Cup events are having it. 23. It was a big week for Mikey as he announced in the lead-up to this race that he would be leaving his longtime seat in Bahari Racing's #30 Pennzoil Pontiac for 1996 to join the Wood Brothers and take over #21 Citgo Ford. 26. It was already known well before this that Junior was selling the 27 team at the end of the season and going back to a one car team with the #11 car. I'm not sure exactly when it was announced that Junior was selling the 11 team as well and getting completely out of NASCAR. It's crazy how quickly a powerhouse owner and team completely went to nothing. Even just one year before this the 11 car finished the season in the top 10 in points and the 27 car won 2 races. It completely fell apart though in 95. 27.
