Dale Earnhardt finished 2nd after taking a champion's provisional to get into the race. 2. Djrfan posted: 09.07.2005 - 5:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Mark Martin picks up career win number 18. 3. Hard to believe that Mark Martin would have to start 42 more Winston Cup races before winning again. 11. At this very race track. 12. Steve posted: 12.28.2008 - 8:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Those Sportsman races held at places like Charlotte were extremely dangerous because of the outdated cars and inexperienced drivers. When Russell's car was launched his roof caught a pole which supported the catchfence. The pole tore through the roof and Russell's head was the next obstacle. The speed led to an inevitable decapitation, and the series stopped racing at Charlotte. Though Atlanta had it's share of bad accidents at that level, and the track has higher speeds, it was surprisingly LESS lethal than Charlotte. What happened to Gordon? 13. He also benefited from great pit work, moving to sixth from 24th after a pit stop under caution. BTW, this was the first NASCAR I had ever attended. It was so enthralling that I fell asleep midway thorugh. Give me a break, I was five! I do remember the finish, I was quite bummed that Martin passed Labonte wih four laps to go to win (wasn't a big Martin fan). The PA announcer alluded to the fact that he had won the Busch race the day before, and I didn't like the fact that he won both races. C'est la vie. Another BTW, qualifying for this race, originally scheduled to begin on Wednesday, was postponed for two days due to rains from Hurricane Opal. Among the highlights of the trip: passing by a Gold's Gym owned by "The Nature Boy" Ric Flair, and watching "The Mask" on the TVs (we took a charter bus). 16. 18fan posted: 06.23.2011 - 3:01 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) One of the reasons Earnhardt was always able to gain a bunch of positions on pit road due to the champion always having the #1 pit stall, which they would change beginning in 1997 to the pole-sitter getting first pit stall selection. 17. He had to win the championship to get that incentive. 18. He was a big Bill Elliott fan and an even bigger Ford fan, and the Biggest Earnhardt (He didn't like Dale because of the schooling Dale gave Bill in the '87 All-Star race and that he was German descent where he fought against them in the Battle of the Bulge in WWII) hater of all time. We watched the whole race together and he even commented after it that that's what GM gets sponsoring a race and a Ford driver winning and it was even better that Earnhardt finished 2nd. However, I did not care really considering that Earnhardt some what got back in the championship race gaining 97 points on Gordon this race. It would have been great Earnhardt winning from 43rd and leading only a few laps (this is something he did for about three years) but oh well. I was so hoping that Labonte would hold up Martin at the end but he got by him quick. Earnhardt passed Labonte for 2nd on the last lap. 21. wrank fakefield posted: 08.27.2014 - 6:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 18fan: Except Earnhardt wasn't pitted in the final pit stall in this race. he was pitted about 2/3rds the way down pit road. Waltrip talked about how confusing it was after his accident, as he got a lap down after a pit road speeding penalty because he saw he was passing earnhardt's pit and nailed the gas, before realizing he was still on pit road. 22. He chose the champion's provisional to let another driver get in the race. Something he typically did often to help the little guy out. 25. M posted: 12.08.2018 - 4:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (4) Dale Earnhardt never had to worry about having the number 1 pit stall after this season. He never won another championship up until the day he died, and after they changed the procedure in 1997 to having the pole sitter get the first pit stall, he never got that also, due to the fact that he was a TERRIBLE qualifier. You saw the difference it made after 1995, as Jeff Gordon took him to school for the rest of his career. Other drivers played a factor as well, such as Martin, Labonte, Jarrett, Wallace, etc. Dale was an also ran by this point in his career. 26. As Dale Earnhardt battled Jeff Gordon for the championship an Earnhardt fan from Louisiana presented him with a Jeff Gordon voodoo doll at an autograph session and the team brought ot to this race with a lot of pins jammed into the right leg joking they didn't want to see Gordon get hurt but they were hopping he wouldn't be as hard on the accelerator. By chance this was a race where Gordon's championship lead took a big hit due to a mechanical problem while Earnhardt finished runner up. 27. In Dale's last full year, the 2000 season, Gordon finished 9th in points and Dale Earnhardt at 49 years of age finished 2nd in points. He beat him out in the last year. Jeff Gordon will have to make a comeback in the 2021 season, 6 years after retirement, and see if he can finish 2nd in points when he is 49. 28. He only went DNF-less in a full season, only once (2014). He had three winless full seasons. He missed the top-10 in points three times (1993-14th, 2005-11th, and 2012-13th). The Greatest Of All Time, Dale Earnhardt, led more laps in fewer races, had a better career average finish, twice went DNF-less (1997 and 2000), and missed the top-10 in points just twice (1982 and 1992, 12th both times). Gordon also never led 3000+ laps in a season. Earnhardt did in 1987. 30. That's why #29 included 2012 as one of the times he finished outside the top 10. lol 33.
