Just him and first-timer Stacy Compton, who hadn't even a Truck Series start yet. Ricky Craven won his first Winston Cup Bud Pole, and led a substantial number of laps for the first time. (Doesn't it feel good to say Winston Cup? It does to me.) 2. myself posted: 02.19.2007 - 3:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another good run by "The Squeal" in Cale's car! Nice. 3. According to a story I heard in an old stock car racing magazine, someone (either his friends or his crew I forget) told Compton they were going "to move up to the next level." Compton thought they meant a higher late model series, he was quite surprised when he found out the higher level race car was a Cup car. Compton caught everyone's attention in this race when he scored an amazing 9th place qualifing run that put him on the fasttrack to NASCAR stardom. 5. Also, the racing between Rusty, Ernie and Jeff was pretty good towards the end. 7. He ran the same paint scheme he won with in North Wilkesboro the previous weekend - A silver design. 11. The newly crowned Iron Man was credited with a disappointing 24th place finish. Petty was very strong and led early going before his brakes caught fire. Rusty had the car to beat for the first half of the race before having an issue on pit road and losing the handling on his car back in the pack. They got his car working well again by the end and he picked up the win anyway with a good comeback. Earnhardt and Irvan both stayed out on the final caution. Ernie's car came on strong at the end of the race while Dale slipped back. Despite crumpling up his front end only 10 laps into the race (aerodynamics don't mean squat at short tracks), Mayfield had a great car and grabbed his 3rd top 10 and 2nd top 5 of his career. 12. He subsequently lost a lap and was not able to make it back up. He still had a strong finish not far outside the top 10. 13. Had Dale Earnhardt not died he was about ready to break Terry's record and become the new Ironman in 2001. They both started together in 79 and that rookie year Earnhardt had a bad crash in Pocono that caused him to miss 4 races. So he was only a few races behind Terry in that streak. 17. Unfortunately,Craven would never get to contend for the championship again. And finished 1996,20th in points. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
