Dale Sr. was still nursing broken bones from a vicious Talladega crash just 2 weeks ago, goes and won what would be his last career pole. On Sunday, David Green was standing by, possibly getting in the car after the first caution. But Dale stayed in the car the whole race, and dominated before finishing 6th. That's guts!!! 2. My TV signal went out due to bad weather with Ken Schrader leading. What a shock to find out Geoff won. 3. Now, some tracks are hard on the head and neck, due to all the G-forces, but this is Watkins Glen, a road-course, where those problems might be even worse. Earnhardt won the pole. And then, Ned Jarrett said: "He didn't just win the pole, he set a new track record!" Injured? Yeah. Earnhardt was tough. As stated before, he dominated, and never got out for someone else. 4. je24go posted: 05.11.2005 - 6:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rusty Wallace was in contention all day, but a pitroad mishap ended his day. Geoff Bodine and Mark Martin were stopped at the end of pitroad by the official. Wallace, not knowing they were stopped, plowed into Martin at 45 MPH, breaking his radiator and ending his chance at winning. 5. MASH_guy posted: 08.17.2005 - 3:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) je24go, I believe you're thinking of the 1995 race. In the 1996 event, Wallace first locked the left-front and spun off of turn 10. Later, he went straight off of turn 11 into the tire barriers. That Wallace wreck paved the way for Bodine's win. That caution came out on lap 54, and every car on the lead lap pitted except Geoff. They knew no one could make it on fuel from there, so they decide to stick to their two-stop strategy, and hope to pass the field when they stopped for fuel. Bodine made his pit stop under green on lap 62, and as he was leaving the pits, the caution came out for Ricky Craven's blown engine. Most cars - including all the leaders - stopped to top off on gas under the yellow. Bodine thus restarted 10th with fresh tires, behind 8 mid-packers trying to stretch the fuel + Wally Dallenbach, who had topped off under green before Bodine stopped - and he wasin front of all the early leaders. He motored through the field on his fresher tires, and after stalking Schrader for several laps, made a daring pass in the esses. From there, it was smooth sailing to the win on his home track (the Bodines grew up a few miles away in Chemung). What a great win. 6. I seemed to remember Jeff Burton dropping fluid in turn 11 and Rusty got in it but it shows Jeff as completing all 90 laps. 9. Frogger49 posted: 03.06.2007 - 5:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Geoff Bodine attempted a similar strategy at Watkins Glen in 1993. It worked similarly in that he pitted, took 4 tires and fuel. Then, he got lapped as soon as he got off pit road (this was after he got spun out in the Inner Loop after Ernie Irvan bounced off the curb and into Geoff). Then the #05 of Ed Ferree wrecked in the Esses, causing a full course caution. In the race back to the line, Bodine overtook the unbeatable Mark Martin to get back on the lead lap. Then, everyone else pitted under caution, handing Bodine the lead. However, that year, he suffered from transmission problems late in the race (he had a lot of trouble with either 3rd or 4th gear) and finished 16th. 14. myself posted: 05.18.2007 - 1:49 pm Rate this comment: (2) (3) Geoff Bodine....one of Nascar's 50 greatest drivers?! Though Bill had made five starts since returning from a broken femur sustained in Talladega, he found after 2 practice laps that the Glen's twists and turns were too much for his leg to handle, and decided to recruit Schroeder as a fill-in. 18. After this, he was never much of a qualifier and would often be relegated to second round qualifying in the late 90's. When Childress swapped crews with Mike Skinner, giving Earnhardt Ken Hamlin, results started to pick back up again after the switch, but Dale still never won a pole, thus keeping him out of the Bud Shootout until they let former winners in the field, thus giving Dale a starting spot. 29. The future Front Row Joe finished never finished better than eighth at the Glen but achieved that feat three times over his career. Of course his self-owned #87 Chevrolet would actually become a contender for wins here in future years once he moved to SABCO and entered his own car as a one-off for road course ace Ron Fellows. 45. Three of Bodine's 18 Cup wins came on road courses with Geoff scoring wins at Riverside, its replacement Sonoma, and the Glen throughout his tenure at the highest level. Bodine and his brothers were very much the hometown heroes when they raced at Watkins Glen, the trio's hometown of Chemung is less than 35 miles from the famous road course. 46. Also this day marked his first win since lapping the field at North Wilkesboro in late 1994. Such a great win by one of the all time greats. 48. I know the explanation was that he lost control because Ernie Irvan was dropping fluid, but that doesn't explain why several cars went around that corner more or less fine before Rusty came along and piled into the tyres. 49.
