Gordon makes a slick move, dodging Dave Marcis's Prodigy #71 Chevy in Turn 1 and wins. Bobby Hamilton was stout yet again at a flat track. Hm...I wonder what'll happen at Phoenix? 5. NASCAR chose not to throw the caution for a complete lap hoping that Dallenbach would restart. Gordon nearly hit his stalled car and at that point NASCAR threw the caution. While Terry Labonte lost points to Gordon on this day, his 1996 championship would not have happened had he not had the rebound he had on this day. Very early on his clutch rod fell out (as 18fan stated) and he fell a lap down, fought back from that in an era where there was no Lucky Dog, fought through the pack and managed to climb all the way up to 2nd in the finish. John Andretti looked to be the 3rd best car on this day and would have finished 3rd but on the last lap Bobby Hamilton tapped him (Hamilton stated it was unintentional despite their previous season's history of contact). ESPN asked Andretti if there would be a grudge or rivalry and Andretti said "Im a little too small to be fighting." but he felt NASCAR needed to do something so he may have felt it may have been a little more than accidental. Looking at the replay, Andretti did appear to check up a bit and it was the last lap, so what could Bobby really do? Racing is racing on the last lap. 16. I can see a race in 2018 having 36 entered. 17. Ryan posted: 02.11.2020 - 7:33 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) No way anyone would have predicted this top-10 18. Strong run all day and if I remember got into an incident and the left rear quarter was stuck out like a parachute. 19. GregSacksIsYourGod posted: 07.20.2020 - 8:43 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Actually, Hamilton had a slow final pitstop under green, before the final rash of cautions, which dropped him to 5th. Though he'd held off Gordon for pretty much the whole race, he was never able to recover that lost ground. Dick Trickle had a really good run in this race as well, around the halfway mark of the race he was the fastest car on track thanks to taking fresh tyres under a caution, and was just about to start challenging Hamilton for the lead before the 4th caution flew. Without that advantage, he was still had a very solid top 10 car under him, until, like Hamilton, he had problems on the final stop which caused an extra man to go over the wall, which in turn brought on a penalty, so he wound up a relatively disappointing 13th. 20. How did Sterling Marlin DNF due to a "crash"? He spun and had ZERO obvious issues with the car leaving from the scene. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
