Martin went down 2 laps early due to a tire, but then-leader and teammate Jeff Burton gave him the 2 laps back. Mark Martin took the lead, held off the rain (whiched caused a caution of 32 laps) and Jeff Gordon to win. 2. If anyone is wondering why Roush entered three Fords and a Pontiac in this race it wasn't because he was flirting with GM or anything, Jack bought out the Greg Pollex-owned John Deere #97 Pontiac team Chad Little was driving for earlier in the week leading up to this race. It was mostly a deal for 1998 when Roush expanded to a then-unheard of 5-car effort. While the team would switch to Fords for 1998 Roush let the team finish out 1997 in their own Pontiac equipment creating the only scenario to date where Roush teams fielded cars from General Motors. 8. NASCAR was afraid they would lose the track if they threw the red and the rain could have stopped at any moment but just kept misting. It sounds incredibly boring but watching the pit strategy play out during the delay was very exciting. 11.
