It rained during qualifying, prompting a short delay in between Johnny Benson and Bobby Hamilton, prompting Benson to proclaim on ESPN 2 that they "keep getting screwed on these deals." Sunday was a washout, causing the race to be delayed until Monday. 6. He backed in the wall in one of the hardest crashes I've ever seen at Martinsville. Rich Bickle was running 12th when he pulled behind the wall on lap 274. Todd Bodine was also in the top 15 when his engine went sour. Jeff Burton had come back from a lap 4 crash and was running 8th when he tried to take 7th away from Brett Bodine and hit Brett's brother Geoff causing all three cars to crash. Mark Martin had a top 5 car when he tried to pit while the pits were still closed. He made an attempt to get back onto the race track but ran into the end of the pit wall. John Andretti ran the last 210 laps on the same left side tires and was gaining on Hamilton when he ran out of gas with 6 laps to go. I would have liked to have seen how fast he would have been on the same tires Hamilton had. Dale Earnhardt restarted 14th with 60 laps to go and worked his way up to 4th, passing Lajoie on the last lap. Musgrave had the fastest car for the last 50 laps. If he hadn't restarted in all the lapped cars he probably could have beat Hamilton. 8. adamal82 posted: 08.20.2007 - 4:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Hut Stricklin's last ride with the Stavola Bros. #8 9. myself posted: 02.26.2008 - 1:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wierd that Morgan-McClure's final win would come @ the shortest track on the circuit given their mid-90s domination of the superspeedways. 10. most posted: 03.10.2008 - 6:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree with myself (that looks strange, lol) The MMM guys won 14 races, Bristol, Martinsville, Sonoma, Glen, Talladega, Daytona and Darlington. Both road courses, both plate tracks, 2 short tracks and a Darlington track that is far from normal. I take it they are not fans of the cookie cutter 1.5 mile tracks? 11. Out of the top ten, only Jeff Gordon runs full-time now. 13. 18fan posted: 01.31.2010 - 5:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also, three of the top 5(Jarrett, Earnhardt, and LaJoie) pitted on the backstretch in the five year anniversary race of the pace car being sped up to drop off the cars on the backstretch(It was done for the 1993 Hanes 500). 14. 18fan posted: 05.31.2010 - 2:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) One of Musgrave's last good runs. 15. Earnhardt, and K. Irwin Jr.) Others run partial schedules like Bill Elliott Joe Nemecheck, Michael Waltrip, Todd Bodine. The only 4 that still run a full schedule are Jeff Gordon, Mark Martin, Bobby Labonte and Jeff Burton. 16. Steve posted: 01.07.2011 - 6:52 pm Rate this comment: (4) (0) Hamilton and Musgrave 1-2? They couldn't stay away from each other if they tried! They duelled for Rookie of the Year in 1991 (Bobby won), both struggled with mid-pack teams in the mid-90s (Hamilton managed to find Victory Lane), and later battled for Craftsman Truck titles (both earned one) until neck cancer showed its hand and took a champion away from us. Ironically, Musgrave himself survived bladder cancer in 2003. 17. 18fan posted: 02.01.2011 - 6:02 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think the race time is off. Despite missing the Daytona 500 he was already in the Top 10 in points after just 7 races, but it didn't last long. A 38th place finish cost him 6 spots. 20. Definitely one of those races where 'the best car won.' Hamilton passed cars on the inside and outside lanes. Also, great run for Morgan Shepherd. Lost a lap early in the race when he stopped in Turn One to avoid a spin in front of him and the car stalled. He spent most of the race trying to get his lap back. 21. anonymous posted: 05.28.2014 - 6:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) hamilton's performance in this race was as good as any. i remember during qualifying, all the drivers thought scuffed tires were faster, but hamilton won the pole with sticker tires. 22. Will posted: 02.09.2016 - 11:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Absolutely dominating performance by Hamilton. It didn't matter if he was stuck back in heavy traffic after a restart. He was especially strong on the high side of the track, making many of his passes up there while others had to use the bottom to get around other cars. Fantastic runs by Musgrave and LaJoie. Aside from Musgrave, the Roush cars had a pretty rough day. Martin's flub at the entrance to pit road was surprising. And Burton looked like he was going to salvage a decent finish after an early crash, only to crash yet again. Also Andretti deserved a better finish than what he got. He was a top 5 car all day until running out of gas at the end. 23. Josh posted: 03.09.2017 - 1:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Why was Jeff Green in the 30? Was Cope injured? Now I know most DNF reasons are usually generic nowadays, unlike the early years where things were more specific, but I don't think I've ever seen that one before. 27. For whatever reason, Hamilton wanted something about that car for Martinsville so they put it back together, took it to Greenville ? Pickens Just a week before this race to test it, left it alone and brought it and dominated. 30. I guess there were 2 races in the late 50s with 47 and one with 44. They didn't have the racing reference site to refer to on the race broadcast and said this was the largest field in Cup history at Martinsville. 31.
