Before they raced, Mayfield realized his childhood dream of passing Darrell Waltrip for the win as D.W. was behind the wheel of a DEI car in substitution for Steve Park. While it's always great to see someone get their first win, I won't forget the post-race interview with an emotional DW : I've been in some holes before and I'm crawling out of a pretty big one right now. They didn't throw quite enough dirt on me. Great stuff, last top 10 or not. 4. I had missed much of this race because I was out of town for most of the day, and luckily when I got home, there were some 5 laps left. But who am I kidding, I was 13. 5. And this was the first NASCAR race I attented. 8. nascarcrazy24 posted: 05.02.2007 - 11:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Not mentioned but I attended this race and it must've been one of the longest races ever run (including the rain delays) The total time of the race reads slightly over 4 hours, but that's not including two 1 hour+ rain delays. Nonetheless it was an excellent race, for reasons already mentioned in this thread. 9. Wallace blew up trying to make up ground. Poor Ken Schrader, started 4th, crashed on lap 6 and finished last. He crashed hard too! 10. Mayfield took the lead right before slight contact between Earnhardt and Schrader sent Schrader into the wall. 18. 18fan posted: 01.18.2010 - 11:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Also the first win for Michael Kranefuss. His three wins as an owner were Mayfield's three wins in the #12. 19. Terminator posted: 11.02.2011 - 5:24 am Rate this comment: (1) (3) Mayfield was set up by Na$car just like Timmy Richmond. 20. Bodine had been heavily hyped as the team's driver before the season started by Tabasco and the company was none too pleased at his termination... one of just many things that would continue to go wrong for the #35 team that year. 21. Ken Schrader and Chad Little both crunched the wall very hard, driver's side impacts too, though neither sustained serious injury. 24. chevyfan98 posted: 11.29.2016 - 11:43 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Following this race, the next six races and nine of the next ten would be won by a driver named "Jeff". 25. jason posted: 06.18.2017 - 6:46 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I was really pulling for DW, he'd had a few hard years not being able to run up front. 26. An irate Petree ordered his crew to load the car anyway.(JournalNow)(6-22-98) -Interesting even tho the team was loading the car on the trailer to go home, NASCAR tried to prevent them from loading the car up on the trailer under the ?Not allowed to work on the cars durning red flag conditions? 29. My favorite driver Ricky Rudd ended his day early so I kinda didn't pay as much attention to the race as I normally would've. Then later on after coming inside from playing for a half hour or so I found out that DW was leading the race. I wasn't alive to see DW as the champion he was but I always liked him for being so entertaining. I was glued to my tv hoping that I could see DW win a race. Unfortunately it didn't happen and i considers this race a failure as nothing I wanted to see happened (a DW win or my favorite finishing the race) but after he did the emotional interview showing how important it was to him just to race up front again I learned a lot about what it truly means to be a champion and a competitor. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
