I think somebody didn't get going and it caused a chain reaction crash. 6. adamal82 posted: 09.05.2007 - 7:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) DW's first race in the # 35 Tabasco Car Note It is a Chevrolet for this race and the next one before the McIllheny Co. forced them to run Pontiacs the rest of the year due to all the promotional materials were printed as Grand Prix and not Monte Carlos 7. Just before Park spun in turn three, Rudd had cut down a right-front and shredded the fender on his car as he limped along the apron in turn two. 12. Haywood posted: 07.26.2008 - 2:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) while there wasn't a lot of passing, this race didn't lack drama. jarrett had by far the best car all day. i'll never forget seeing him coast around into turn 3 where i was seated, with the engine not turning and his voice on the radio confirming, "i'm outta gas." can't imagine how they messed that one up because there's no worse track in the world to run out of gas at, especially on the back stretch. gordon never really was challenged by anyone other than martin after that. jarrett claimed all four of his laps back but never recovered. if it wasn't for some late cautions, gordon would have won this by a wide margin. martin was close to him on the final few restarts, but the final caution flag killed his run to the front. i don't remember who caused it but the field was bunched up and nearly closed off the front stretch on the final restart. the narrow straights make almost any accident involving multiple cars develop into a traffic jam. 13. jacksonedb posted: 11.12.2008 - 1:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) On the last restart, Joe Nemechek got into the back of Jeff Green, and it was a chain reaction from there. Also, the #97 car isn't shown as being involved in the crash in the caution listings, but he was taken out by the crash along with Pressley, Rudd, and Green. 14. Well, he led lap 80, but it took a while for him to complete lap 81. He made up 4 laps, but he ran out of time... 17. myself posted: 08.17.2009 - 2:35 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) Hilarious that Jarrett had the field covered by a large margin but couldn't win it b/c he was stupid! 18. 18fan posted: 07.21.2010 - 1:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ernie Irvan ties his best finish of 1998, a sixth. There was a tie in promotion by Valvoline with the paint job that gave away a Winston Cup-spec Roush Ford Taurus stock car to one lucky fan, IIRC the guy who won the race car had only bought the package of SynPower to enter because it had come packaged with a Hot Wheels car of Mark's car for this race that his kid had wanted. I also recall he was offered a lot of money as a prize in place of the car but still took the racer. No idea what he did with it. 20. He dominated the race and by far was the driver/car to beat all day. He was in another universe in 1998. 25. Bad Booking posted: 12.05.2016 - 9:28 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This Brickyard 400 summed up 1998 in a lot of different ways: 1. The opening portion of the race was competitive with different players potentially claiming the throne. 2. Jeremy Mayfield had a strong beginning, but ultimately crashed out later. 3. Dale Jarrett, for as strong as he was, ran out of gas and had to play some catch up. 4. Darrell Waltrip got an incredible run out of subpar equipment. 5. Mark ran his best Brickyard 400 to date, but lost to Jeff Gordon when it came down to it. His next best chance at the race was in 2009 when he came in, you guessed it, runner up to Jimmie Johnson. Steve Park's return that also ended in a huge hit. 26. Anthony posted: 12.05.2016 - 9:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the last NASCAR premier series race before I was born. While Dale made up four laps, Jeff also made up a lap with him virtually every time too. ESPN reported him losing 18 laps, so he only made 3 up if that count is correct, but still, he was bad fast that day too. 30. I am not a big fan but he was looking at a top 10 points finish that year, they were running well enough to get it." He still would have had a tough time finishing in the top-10 in points. If he hadn't missed those two races, he would have had to average about a 4th-place finish in both of them to have earned enough points to be in the top-10 (ahead of Bobby Hamilton) at season's end. Especially considering one of the races he missed was Watkins Glen, where he only had 1 career top-15 finish, that seems rather unlikely. 31. RaceFanX posted: 03.31.2018 - 2:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Cup series rookie Kenny Irwin, Jr. made his first Brickyard 400 start here and for much of the race was having a great run. He qualified in the top-5 and ran there for most of the race until the 117th lap when crashed out of sixth place just after surrendering fifth to Terry Labonte. Dale Earnhardt came up behind Irwin fast and took the air off the #28 Ford's spoiler, while there was no contact it caused Irwin to lose control and crash on the short straight between Turns 1 and 2. Irwin lost it and hit the outside wall then spin 360 degrees befoore hitting the inside wall where he sent a group of photographers working just behind the guardrail running in the other direction. It was a tough end to what was shaping up to be one of Irwin's best runs of the season. 32. RaceFanX posted: 03.31.2018 - 2:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jeff Gordon's $1.6 million payday for winning this race was the largest in NASCAR history at the time he took the checkered flag. The Pennzoil team usually ran a yellow-and-black paint scheme in 1998 (as was par for all Pennzoil's race teams at the time). Here however Steve Park made his return with a reverse colored #1 Chevrolet that was painted black-and-yellow. 33. CJ posted: 04.18.2018 - 7:41 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Steve Park runs well most of the day in his return but a late crash knocks him out of the race. Kenny Irwin and Jeremy Mayfield also run well but crash in seperate incidents. Interestingly, NASCAR did not throw a caution for Mayfield's wreck. Ernie Irvan matches his season best finish. Final start for Wally Dallenbach in the 13. First start in the 35 for Darrell Waltrip and also his 4th consecutive 13th place finish. Final Top 15 finish for Morgan Shepherd. 34.
