Being on a road course Gordon, Martin, and Wallace didn't pit until they window opened which was under green. All three had to charge back through the field. Gordon made an unreal pass of Wallace in the inner loop and assumed he had won the race. Turns out Skinner stayed out and tried to stretch fuel and Ray informed Jeff he didn't to pass Mike there was less than 10 laps to go and Skinner led by 6 seconds. Unfortunately for Mike, he was very low fuel and had to go basically half throttle. Jeff grabbed the lead and drove off into the sunset for easy win and swept the road course in '98. Both road course races were extermely exciting that year. 2. nejbucks24 posted: 05.10.2006 - 4:53 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sorry meant to say Jeff needed to pass Mike. 3. Martin finished 2nd to Gordon's incredibly point total but posts a season that would have won him a championship in almost any other year in the modern era. 5. But it definitely wasn't Hendricks if I read correctly. 14. Art D posted: 06.26.2009 - 11:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) 36th career win for J. Gordon 15. Larry Gunselman also stood by to relieve Jeremy Mayfield, who was hurt in a very hard Indy crash, but Mayfield stayed in. Terry Labonte skipped over the gravel in turn 10 and hit the foam wall very hard, but was unhurt and returned to the race. 16. Given that, according to the Friday race notebook on motorsport.com, Gunselman's hauler broke down on the way to the track, leaving him with no track time on Friday and only 90 minutes to try to learn the track on Saturday, his turning the car over to a more experienced driver was a logical choice. 34. Hilariously this prompted calls from the grandstand for Rusty Wallace to go save it. At the time Miller Lite was running a series of joking commercials called "The Adventures of Rusty and his Miller Time Machine," in which Wallace's #2 Miller Lite Ford Taurus was portrayed as a time machine, the most played and funniest of which saw Wallace's pit crew find a hurt woodchuck before asking Rusty to go back and time and save it. 42.
