The battle at the end was awesome to see in person, especially with the sea of flash bulbs going off all around the track the whole last 5-10 laps. Burton had a pretty wild near-spin earlier in the race going for the lead, he had to take evasive action and cut across the apron in turn 3 and back up onto the banking at speed, it was a great piece of driving. He really earned the win that day. 9. Sean posted: 06.07.2009 - 1:38 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) My dad was at this race. He said it was a great finish even though he's a gordon fan. I miss the exide days with burton in the 99. the 31 is terrible its just a shame what has happened 10. Josh posted: 06.16.2010 - 1:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) with the way gordon was back in those days, im actually surprised that this race ended clean. gordon has that "get out of my way" tendency and has done the bump and run several times, most notably to rusty wallace at bristol...twice, to bobby labonte at martinsville back in 03 and tried to do it to jimmie johnson at martinsville in 07. i was pleasantly surprised. jeff gordon has become a favorite of mine but at this time i heavily disliked him. 12. 18fan posted: 11.20.2010 - 4:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I bet nobody would've thought this would be Schrader's last top 5. 13. Jimmy Spencer was leading during a round of green flag pit stops when Dick Trickle crashed. 14. The psychedelic 1960s look was designed to tie-in with the 30th anniversary of the McDonald's Big Mac hamburger. Sterling Marlin also had a different sponsor for this race as his car was sponsored by Coors Non-Alcholic. Marlin had previously run the near beer scheme at Pocono in July. 15. When he nudged Rusty out of the way at Bristol in '96 and '02, or even Bobby Labonte at Martinsville in '03those moves were absolute textbook on how to move a guy for a win. Gordon only got those guys a little loose and out of the groove BUT HE DID NOT WRECK THEM. That's the key. There's only one groove at those racetracks, and Jeff Gordon was faster. Absolute textbook. The Jeff Gordon vs. Jimmie Johnson duel at Martinsville in '07 was very frustrating to Gordon. It was the first race with the COT at Martinsville. Gordon was the faster car but the bumpers on those cars lined up so perfectly, it didn't get Johnson out of shape when Gordon tried that same move to get him loose. Gordon was race Johnson pretty carefully but I remember him saying he was "pissed" off in post-race. As he should've been; he lost the race with the faster car to a teammate that has shown him up. I think Gordon thought he could beat Burton clean, and Burton raced him clean, so it was a real pleasure to watch. Burton was faster. And lets applaud Richmond - not many tracks have two competitive grooves like this. A battle like this wouldn't be possible at other tracks. 18. He will move a guy if he is desperate for a victory (2002 Bristol night to break a lengthy losing streak) or if he knows he clearly has a better car (Martinsville 2003 with B. Labonte). With that being said Gordon ran Burton very clean due to their contact in the '97 Southern 500 for the Winston Million on the last lap. It was text book driving by Burton to keep Gordon pinned in the low line. In fact Gordon was running Burton down using the high line and Burton smartly moved to the high line in the last ten or so laps. 20. First start for Todd Bodine in the 91. Only start for Ted Musgrave in the 96. 23. It was the first ever Scooby-Doo full length movie at 77 minutes. The film was released 2 weeks later on the 22nd. The slogan of the film was "This time, the monsters are real". The car wasn't monstrous however, as he would have 5 finishes of 35th or lower, 3 dnf's, and a best finish of 19th at Daytona. 24. JollyMeanGiant posted: 03.25.2019 - 1:40 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jerry did have a good run with the Zombie Island car at Dover, starting in the top 10 and spending well over 200 laps running there. However, his good run came to an end when he was taken out of the race late in a crash with Todd Bodine and Mike Skinner. 25.
