The race had been delayed for rain and the teams were aware more was on the way. On lap 160 it started to sprinkle. One lap later the sky opened and rain coated the track. Before Nascar could wave the yellow, Kenny Irwin, Ernie Irvan, and others crashed out of turn four, right in front of the leaders. The rain was heavy and the track was nearly blocked. Leader Jeff Burton plowed through the mess and was able to continue the twenty yards down the track to take the yellow flag. They field made one lap under yellow with the leader's car smoking and his right front wheel barely hanging on. Jeff Gordon in third also sustained damage and wanted to see the race called. Thankfully, for the two, the race was called a few minutes later. 2. HomeDepot20TS posted: 03.09.2006 - 8:50 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tony Stewart's first career top 10. 3. Anyone know what Buddy Parrott was doing in Burton's pit? Wasn't Frankie Stoddard his crew chief? 15. 18fan posted: 01.27.2010 - 1:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Buddy Parrott was the team manager for Burton, IIRC. I know he was in 1998. Buddy was just there to assist Frankie Stoddard. 16. Josh posted: 09.19.2010 - 2:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) What a race. A very short Darlington classic. Burton wins with a car wrecked badly when he crashed at the yellow flag for rain. Good runs for Stewart, John Andretti, and others. Wonder how different the race would of turned out if Darlington had lights back then in 1999. 17. I mean that wheel was messed up pretty bad. He may not have made it around another lap.....under caution. 18. myself posted: 06.04.2013 - 12:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) I wonder how high The Squeal was during his runs of success in the 12 car? 19. Between the first Michigan race in 1998 and this race, Gordon finished in the top 3 an incredible 21 times in 25 races (84% of the time). His other finishes were 5th, 5th, 7th, and 39th. He also led laps in all but 3 of those races. 25. Mile501 posted: 09.05.2019 - 3:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @25 - And if NASCAR had thrown the caution for rain 1 lap sooner, all 43 cars would have been running at the finish. The 2 cars that dropped out only did so because they crashed as the rain began. 27. Mile501 posted: 11.12.2021 - 10:21 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Although the comments section isn't what it used to be, I would like to note a couple of things, having just re-watched this race: - Ernie Irvan spun all on his own to initiate the crash that brought out the final caution. He and Kenny Irwin were running 9th and 10th at the time, but both would drop well back in the final finishing order after crashing. - In his second substitute role (the other was for Bill Elliott at Dover in the fall of 1998), Matt Kenseth scored his second top 10 finish. He would have come up a bit short of a top 10, however, if Irvan hadn't crashed just before the rain ended the race. - Still, Kenseth's drive was impressive. He took over after the first rain delay and drove from 34th up to 10th during a 106-lap green flag run, without the aid of any caution flags. - Rick Mast had a similarly impressive run. He started 6th but got a flat tire due to contact with Kevin Lepage, which led to the accident that occurred on lap 3. Restarting back in 40th, he drove all the way back up to a strong 13th place finish, as the Cale Yarborough-owned team continued to search for a sponsor. - Robert Pressley had trouble qualifying for races in early 1999, but ran well in the races he made. This was his 3rd start of the season, and all 3 resulted in top 20 finishes, including 14th at Rockingham and 15th in this race, two of the most difficult tracks on the circuit. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
