At the time, 82% of Richmond race winners at came from a top ten qualfying position. Dale Jarrett started mid-pack and won from 21st starting spot. 11. As a Bobby fan, this was his first true race as a contender on the short tracks in the Cup series. 12. Jeff started on the pole cut a tire lost a lap and made contact with Geoffrey Bodine under caution while lining on the inside line under caution. It was his 4th finish of 30th or worse in the first 11 races. He left 251 points out of first and would not be closer for the rest of the season. Jeff and Ray picked up two road course wins before their September split. I always wondered did bad luck catch up to the #24 team or did Ray began to lose focus as he plotted his next career move. Many thought he would enter a management role at Hendrick. He wanted to lure Tommy Baldwin Jr to be his successor but he declined. 15. The team started out 1999 with a bang and then it ended in purgatory. Then somewhere along the line, they had a lot of engine failures and they had an equal amount of both and that's what kept them from the title. Ray needed a new challenge and a fresh start, to be laser-focused and working the way he did it was eventually going to catch up to him and many factors were starting to wear on the team at that point as well, they were the #1 team and they were being watched very closely probably more than the others, I even think NASCAR even told Ray Evernham and Jeff Gordon to tone it down a bit because they weren't near as competitive after the split although they did win a couple races after 1998 the double digit win years were never seen again. Still, they won 49 races in six years, which is unheard of. Plus, there were more competitive cars and Dale Earnhardt was starting to get back to his winning ways and Tony Stewart burst on the scene. 16.
