This was Loy Allen's triumphant return to the Cup Series, albeit for a few races before he officially headed off into NASCAR lore forever. 4. The only interesting tidbit to this race is in the following Michigan race a driver (likely Jimmy Spencer) through a peice of roll bar padding wrapped in duct tape on the track to bring out a debris caustion. The good news for NASCAR fans is, we now get to witness 4 races of this caliber a year as NASCAR now frequents the always unexciting California Speedway.WOOOo. 7. racer posted: 12.16.2006 - 11:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) wasn't there rain in the forecast? and had jimmy spencer not had the blown engine would nt everyone be running at the finish? 8. That's where I usually loose interest and change the channel. 13. SK posted: 09.20.2007 - 1:12 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Harry Melling died of a heart attack the day before the Coca-Cola 600. Ironically, Ernie Irvan records his last top-10 start (an outside pole!) and final laps led here at Michigan, the track where his career (and life) nearly ended in 1994 and where his career would end two months later as the result of injuries sustained in practice crashes. 14. Harry's favorite color was red and thats why a majority of the Melling Peformance, Melling Engine Gear, ect cars were red. It was like the Blue car but with red and white numbers. 22. 23andJoe posted: 03.04.2014 - 1:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #98 crew chief: Mark Tutor (races 14-25 as well as the ones he's already listed for; Pitts left the team before this race.) 23. 18fan posted: 05.08.2014 - 3:32 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the fastest race in MIS history (not surprising) and the last race in a stretch where 7 out of 8 MIS races featured 3 or fewer cautions. It has only happened twice since this race, and one was a race that only went 162 laps due to rain. 24. Close finish. 26. Will posted: 02.08.2017 - 7:17 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Jarrett's car tightened up on him near the end, or at least that's what he said. That's what allowed Gordon to get semi close to him at the finish. Gordon thought Jarrett was just taking it easy the last laps. Among those who had better runs going, Elliott was running in the top 5 when he had an oil line come loose, causing him to lose laps for repairs. Martin had to make an unscheduled pit stop due to a loose wheel, but still made his way back into the top 10 by the end. And both the Penske boys were in the top 10 with 10 to go, but were getting lousy gas mileage, forcing them to pit one final time and lose several spots. 27. RaceFanX posted: 06.18.2019 - 10:03 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Bill Elliott and Harry Melling had a lot of success together. After Melling's passing Elliott and his team adorned the back of the #94 with a message for this race in his honor reading "WE MISS YOU HARRY MELLING" along with a pair of #9s in the font Awesome Bill used in his days with the team. As noted above Elliott was running great before that oil line issue dropped him from contention. 28. As a result, TV Guide removed a planned promotion of NASCAR and driver Stewart, Mayfield, Bobby Labonte and Jeff Burton from the cover of a future issue (individual issues would have a picture of one of the four drivers on the cover), replacing the pictures of the drivers with women's soccer instead. They still ran a feature story about NASCAR however. 30. rm posted: 03.15.2020 - 12:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Possibly stupid query here - is this the most recent Cup Series points-paying race in which a driver scored a top ten while also recording a DNF? 31. That's the only reason I knew. 34. SweetRich posted: 07.06.2020 - 1:00 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) After sponsor after sponsor came and went from the #98 Ford, Cale Yarborough Motorsports finally landed full-time sponsorship from Universal Studios and Woody Woodpecker for the rest of 1999, starting here. Rick Mast had minimal success even with the sponsorship deal with a poor outing finishing a distant 37th to begin a new era with the single-car operation. 35. 5395racing posted: 08.26.2020 - 8:58 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The irony.
