The finish order was shaken up when several drivers came in to get tires in anticipation of an announced 10-lap dash to the checkers, only to have the rains pick up and force the race to end. 2. Ward Burton had a better car, but the rain cut it short and he did not have the laps to catch his brother. Jeff Burton said "Winning the Southern 500 is a big deal." I wish NASCAR still considered the Southern 500 a "big deal." 8. myself posted: 08.19.2009 - 10:39 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Brian France....enough said. 9. b4il3y posted: 05.07.2010 - 1:03 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) myself - Rick Mast? He was a journeyman who never had a honestly GREAT ride (some *decent* ones), but still accomplished a lot during his career. The mark of a great driver is taking a 25-30th place car, and finishing in the top 10-15. Mast did that often. 13. The Southern 500 is definitely a crown jewel again. 17. SweetRich posted: 06.29.2020 - 4:31 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) the commentators were Bob Jenkins, Ned Jarrett and Benny Parsons.
