Jeff Burton sweeps Darlington, with both races being rain-shortened. The
finish order was shaken up when several drivers came in to get tires in
anticipation of an announced 10-lap dash to the checkers, only to have
the rains pick up and force the race to end.

Ernie Irvan announced his retirement at Darlington and his replacement
for the remainder of '99, Jerry Nadeau, was running in the top five when
a blown tire off turn two sent him into the outside and then inside
walls hard.

I was in the infield at this race, my first Southern 500, and it was a
great race that did not seem like it would ever end with rain delays and
cautions. Ward Burton had a better car, but the rain cut it short and he
did not have the laps to catch his brother. Jeff Burton said "Winning
the Southern 500 is a big deal." I wish NASCAR still considered the
Southern 500 a "big deal."

Mast was actually pretty bad. But so was Cale as an owner LOL. It's a
shame this race got rained out. It was a good one.

lol @ the "Rick Mast is bad" comments. He was a journeyman who never had
a honestly GREAT ride (some *decent* ones), but still accomplished a lot
during his career.

The mark of a great driver is taking a 25-30th place car, and finishing
in the top 10-15. Mast did that often.

The lap leader breakdown has Jeff Burton leading from lap 245 to lap
279, when the race itself only lasted 270 laps.

Ever seen the move back to Labor Day in 2015 it seems that is again the
case. The Southern 500 is definitely a crown jewel again.

the commentators were Bob Jenkins, Ned Jarrett and Benny Parsons. The
pit road reporters were Dr. Jerry Punch, John Kernan and Bill Weber.

The 3rd Southern 500 that ended due to rain or darkness in the decade of
the 90's with the other two taking place in 1992 and 1993, won by
Darrell Waltrip and Mark Martin, respectively.
