That would be sad, because even with 2 titles, Terry is maybe the most underrated driver ever. He never gets mentioned as a "great". 15. Ricky Rudd's streak of winning at least one race every year, dating back to 1983, comes to a screeching halt in 1999. From his first win in 1983 at Riverside to the infamous Martinsville survival-fest of 1998 (16 years), Rudd scored 20 Winston Cup wins. He would continue the winless steak into 2000 after bad luck robbed him of a few certain victories. 24. He had opportunities, he finished a strong second to Dale Earnhardt at Rockingham in the fall of 1994 and he won the pole for the first Brickyard 400. His equipment could have suited him better. * Of the 17 drivers still active, Mayfield is the only one not active as of 2011. You can also throw Mike Skinner and Todd Bodine in their as active. * This was also the final event for the 1998-99 Ford Taurus, the car won one title with Dale Jarrett but was much better than the Thunderbird which only won a title with Alan Kulwicki. The rest of the titles in the 90's were won by Earnhardt 1990, 1991, 1993, 1994 and Jeff Gordon 1995, 1997 and Terry Labonte in 1996 all in Chevys. In 2000-Ford would switch to a more rounded, updated version with new headlights and tailights which was probably the best body style Ford ever made. * This was also the final season of the moustache for two drivers, Dale Jarrett and Terry Labonte as they would show up the next year clean shaven. Jarrett kept the look the rest of his career, while Terry Labonte went back to the look in early to late 2002. Kevin LePage shaved his and did not grow his back until 2003 when he was a part-timer. 26. Nadeau would drive the 25 car, replacing Wally Dallenbach and Michael Holigan Homes as a sponsor replacing Bud. * Last race for Mark Martin's "Flaming V's" Valvoline scheme he ran from 1998-2000. * Last race for the All Red Citgo Ford, the Wood Brothers would adopt a more updated scheme in 2000, and turn it into CITGO SUPERGARD. * Last race for Tim Beverley's 10-10-345 effort and Lucky Dog cars, basically Darrell Waltrip's old team. * Last race for Johnny Benson with Jack Roush and the yellow 26 also saw its last race, the team shut its doors at the end of the year and basically its assets became the 17 as Matt Kenseth joined the team in 2000. * Last race that DEI ran an all black roof area, starting in 2000...Steve Park and new driver Dale Earnhardt Jr., would run an updated version of the paint schemes. * Final race for Kenny Irwin Jr. in the Texaco Havoline Ford, Irwin Jr. was let go at the end of the year and went to Sabco. * Final time STP would run a full season on the 43 as STP vowed to run the first half of the 2000 season but would leave after that. STP would return to NASCAR but in a limited capacity years later. * Last time Robbie Loomis worked for the Petties until 2008 when he returned to Petty Enterprises to oversee the operation, now he works with Richard petty Motorsports. Loomis would go to Hendrick Motorsports in 2000 and win the 2001 NWC title with Jeff Gordon. * Final race for the Kelloggs #5 Cornelius the Rooster paint scheme run by Terry Labonte from 1994-1999, it basically had Cornelius the Rooster on the hood. In 2000, the car changed to more red and less yellow and lacked any characters on the hood and Tony the Tiger was featured on the side panel. 27. Schroeder51 posted: 01.25.2012 - 9:57 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) A vicious crash in this race happened when Michael Waltrip blew an engine and spun in turns 3 and 4. Terry Labonte, who was already 50 laps down, plowed into him and crashed as well. Rick Mast and Kenny Wallace, who were also more than 50 laps down, got tangled up and crashed trying to avoid the spinning cars. Waltrip was knocked unconscious in the crash and had to be taken to the hospital with a concussion. Coming back to the caution, Jerry Nadeau raced Bobby Labonte and Steve Park to try to make up a lap, and nearly plowed into the back of Terry's car. He got up too high and lost control and spun in front of Bobby, who just barely avoided colliding with Nadeau's car. John Andretti was knocked out of contention when he and Kenny Irwin collided on pit road during a cycle of green flag pit stops. Andretti spun and crashed into the pit wall, breaking a tie rod on his car, which forced him to go behind the wall for repairs. 28. Philips of course has the naming rights for the Atlanta arena that is home of the Atlanta Hawks NBA team and was home to the Atlanta Thrashers before they moved to Canada. Waltrip's accident was a pretty scary moment, I remember that Steve Park - who was good friends and in just over a year would be teammates with Waltrip - was pretty shaken up and asked repeatedly for an update on Michael's condition. The 1 car up to that point had been good enough to potentially win the race, but he faded from there and was a complete non-factor in the end. 30. Ak47 posted: 12.23.2016 - 2:46 pm Rate this comment: (2) (1) Being on this site for a year or two has taught me that every race fan thinks they know "who gets the good equipment". Newsflash: it would never be that blatant, and every team has always wanted all of its cars to succeed. How have we not yet accepted that we have no clue about the inner workings of race teams? And in cases where a certain driver gets the "best speedway car", etc. 99% of the time it's because that is the driver that gives the team its best chance to win, thus obviously deserving of "the best equipment" If Roush gave his best car to Johnny Benson every week in 1999, it'd have gone to waste because he's no Mark Martin. And Martin never would've been in the title race. Even the "#4" Roush ride is still better than 50+% of the field, making Benson, Little, Lepage, later-tenure Musgrave's lack of performance inexcusable. 39. Eric posted: 12.23.2016 - 11:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) @38, Actually it is very close in terms of being blatant in some cases. Take a look at the 25 team when Jerry Nadeau was the driver. You actually had whispers on the garage area that the 25 car was a Research and development based on what I read in the early 2000's. My proof is how do explain the 25 team with Jerry Nadeau usually had problems when it runs well like Equipment part failures like engine failure at 2001 Chicagoland, 2000 spring Atlanta Engine failure, engine failure at 2000 Coca Cola 600 after leading 115 laps. Jerry had mechanical problems at Watkins Glen in 2000 while being 2nd place, and at Sonoma in 2001 while being the top 5. Those examples of Jerry Nadeau having equipment problems shows something is up with that team and why there was rumors of the 25 car being a research and development team for Hendrick. 42. Eric posted: 12.23.2016 - 11:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) I started following NASCAR in 1993 with the NASCAR first race I watched the 1993 Daytona 500 and it possible for a 1 team from an organization being way better than the other teams in the same organization without it being the driver's fault. I remembered back in the day, there was issues with Hendrick back in the 1990's with sharing information. Gary Dehart in April of 2000 even mentioned that the reason left Hendrick Motorsports during the 1997 season was caused by Ray Evernham. Gary said that tensions was very high at Hendrick motorsports in 1997 and there was not cooperation among the 3 teams. Gary even claimed Ray was attempting to take control of Hendrick Motorsports during Rick Hendrick's absence and alienating the other Hendrick Motorsports teams. That basically means Gary thought Ray was trying to sabotage Hendrick Motorsports teams while Rick couldn't show up at the shop. The 5 in 1997 and 1998 was still a good race team, but they was problems behind the scenes and Terry did suffer as a result combined with him getting older. When a crew chief said there was problems with another crew chief in the same organization to the media like Gary did, that actually shows there was true problems behind the scenes for a race organization. 43. Since qualifying order was set by random draw, you could just as likely get a small team running when the track was good, or a big time team when it was slow. 51. In 99, DJ finally wins it all with his first title after locking up the week before at the inaugural race at Miami, and he came into this race 211 points ahead. In 96, DJ finished 3rd in the points, finishing 89 points behind Terry Labonte (ironically Bobby's brother) In '97, Jarrett had his most heartbreaking championship loss, coming into the finale at Atlanta 77 points behind Gordon, and winding up 14 behind Gordon. Had Jarrett won the 1997 NAPA 500, and had gotten all the points Bobby Did in that race (185) He still would have lost the title by a measly four points. Gordo finished 17th, barely enough as it was.
