Bristol is an amazing facility that can't be described to full effect. Everyone must visit Bristol once to see it all. This was Rusty's 50th career win by te way. 3. Rusty had the best car by far, but Benson had to race through the field to finish 2nd in the Lycos.com Pontiac (really unsponsored, because Lycos never paid). 6. Earnhardt was pretty displeased that Irwin didn't step on the brakes and let his car slide down. 7. Meanwhile down at Homestead-Miami Speedway, Max Papis takes the Miller Lite car to victory in the CART race. Not only that, but in Seattle, the Kingdome was imploded that morning too. 8. biffle16 posted: 06.02.2007 - 9:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's ironic that both Irwin and Earnhardt would die within a few months. 9. Except the day he won the Winston Cup back in '89 at Atlanta. 10. samfan08 posted: 05.18.2008 - 8:43 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Rusty's 50th win! This also happened to be the only race in which I was rooting for someone other than him since Davey Allison died. My uncle, and Earnhardt fan, was in the hospital and I told him I'd root for Earnhardt for him, not realizing that Rusty had 49 wins. 11. Matt Kenseth turned Robby Gordon on lap 38 and behind the accident, Bobby Labonte turned Earnhardt. Earnhardt fought his all the way up from the back of the field to muscle his way past Jeff Gordon for the lead, but just after ESPN went to a commercial break, Kenseth caused another accident by turning Kenny Irwin going into turn 3 and Irwin slid back down the track. He clipped Earnhardt in the right rear door and caused Earnhardt to spin into the outside wall. As Earnhardt drove away, his right rear tire fell off. He had to spend 150+ laps in the garage to replace his bent rear end housing. Tony Stewart was running 6th when his water pump belt and alternator belt came off on lap 70. As a result, Stewart's motor failed and he had to come down pit road, and wound up being retired from the race. 12. Martin made contact with Ken Schrader and spun down the backstretch. Fuller had already spun twice earlier in the race-once by Brett Bodine, the other by Sterling Marlin. Joe Nemechek went up high on the track, and behind him, Brett Bodine got into the back of Dale Jr., who was already 11 laps down after being caught up in the second lap crash with Elliott Sadler. Junior pounded the wall hard off of turn 4 and slid down into the inside wall for another heavy impact. The biggest crash of the day happened with 38 to go when John Andretti got into the back of Dave Blaney, who was 5 laps down after making an early green flag pit stop. Both cars crashed and Andretti slid down the track and was T-boned by Rick Mast. 13. However, Kranefuss was listed as the owner while being a teammate to Wallace. 23. Eric posted: 06.27.2015 - 10:48 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @21, It is true that Mayfield drove for Penske. The thing is Michael Kranefuss actually was part owner of the 12 car at the time. What happened was Michael Kramefuss was a team owner and he sold part of his interest to Roger Penske. Jeremy Mayfield actually was Michael's Kramefuss's cup driver before Michael sold part interest of the team to Roger after the 1997 season. Mayfield was Michael Kranefuss's driver in 1996 replacing John Andretti. When Michael sold part of his interest, the car number was changed from 37 to 12. 24. Penske brought out Michael Kranefuss's rest of his interest of the 12 team after the 2001 season. 25. RaceFanX posted: 06.27.2015 - 11:06 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The Penske deal was a merger to create a second car for Penske's team. The #12 team was run as Penske-Kranefuss Racing, being a continuation of Kranefuss' old #37 team, for a few years before The Captain bought Michael out. Kranefuss remained the team's registered owner through the end of 2000. 26. b4il3y posted: 07.02.2015 - 5:13 am Rate this comment: (2) (2) You called him Methdield. Yeah, your so cool. No, its not. Unfortunately his fortunes were about to reverse as he was taken out in a late crash here, causing him to fall out of the top-10 in points. He would not get that high in points again for the rest of the season. 32. Had his team been just a minute or two slower in making repairs during this race, though, he would have missed that milestone. 33.
