The race was shaping up to be a real shootout between Tony Stewart and Dale Earnhardt before one final rain shower and impending darkness shortened the race to 194 laps. 2. It looked a lot like McDowell qualifying at Texas this year, or Ricky Craven's 1996 crash at Talladega, 7. Sunday's weather was nasty, but Friday and Saturday's weather were excellent for practice/qualifying and the IROC/ARCA races. As a kid, my first Cup weekend experience featured hot sunburning weather and cool, soaking rainy weather. 13. What no one knew at the time was just how close his streak was to ending... 14. Their final WC race would be Saturday July 1 at Daytona and final NASCAR race overall was a Truck race from Nazareth. 16. He only took two tires on the Mayfield engine caution and wound up leading the race under the pace car with rain starting to fall. After those drops cleared away and they got running he held his ground relatively well and was battling Bobby Labonte for 4th when the final caution came out. 17. They also announced their new number: 92. "Why #92? as heard during the MRN Qualifying broadcast: Mark Melling said it stands for 9 the second time around as the team reinvents itself." 19. The final caution lasted 3 laps, not 2, as Stewart took the caution flag at the end of lap 191, with laps 192-194 being under caution. In addition, the final caution was not for rain but rather for separate incidents involving the 42 and 60 cars on the frontstretch. Right when they were about to restart, the rains came and the race was halted 6 laps early. 20. It's probably worse than childbirth." - Tony Stewart, when asked if he could hold off Dale Earnhardt if the rain stopped and they were able to run the full distance. Robby Gordon had a surprisingly strong run during the first third of this race. He was around 10th when the first round of green-flag pit stops began, but lost a number of positions during the pit cycle and then fell back farther as the race went on. Also, having just watched this race, I can verify comment #19 as being correct regarding the length and cause of the final caution period. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
