Earnhardt hypocrisy at its finest. Jeremy Mayfield did what most would not have the courage to do and congrats to him. I just wish he could win more races and that someone would have the courage to bump Jeffie for the win one day. The race was run on Monday after a rainout on Sunday. 7. I thought it was a mistake towards the end of the race. I had the remote in hand ready to shut the race off in disgust, when Mayfield showed more guts than I gave him credit for. Raised my opinion of Jeremy tenfold with that move. And then he had the presence of mind to use Dale's own line on him - "I didn't mean to wreck him, I just wanted to rattle his cage." I had no idea what had happened until I walked back to the car and turned the radio on. 13. Pork Rind posted: 04.12.2007 - 1:48 pm Rate this comment: (6) (0) I was there in turn 3, atop a motor home with about 8 or so other people. As the laps were winding down and Earnhardt continued to lead, the only Earnhardt fan in our group was dancing around and thinking it was all sewn up for Earnhardt. I was listening to the race on my scanner, and as they were on the final lap, heading for turn 3, I pointed and yelled to everyone, "Here they come!" We all looked as they came into turn 3, and as they were exiting turn 3, Mayfield bumped Earnhardt, causing Earnhardt to wiggle and go up the track a bit, enough for Mayfield to get by and win. The guy who was dancing for Earnhardt stopped and just stood there in shock and everyone else, myself included, was cheering. As soon as Mayfield got by Earnhardt I switched to Earnhardt's frequency on my scanner and heard Earnhardt screaming something to the effect of, "He hit me! He fu**ing hit me!" I don't remember the exact words, but he was cursing over what Mayfield had done to him. 14. Earnhardt recovered from an early vibration and made his way from 42nd to the lead- I'd like to see Mayfield do that- only to have this cheap punk #12 nudge a guy who's running for the championship. Though, this was just one of many races Dale was cheated out of in the year 2000. As for the rest of you Earnhardt haters, why not check how many championships Dale had compared to Mayfield's total victories. 22. I bet you'd say that was just clean racing right? Earnhardt was a great great driver but was a punk cheatshot driver when it came to the last lap. You make a terrible argument. 23. He should have been drug tested after this race. And Clayton, you shouldn't have won anything, because Mayfield didn't "spin" him out. The greatest thing about the whole episode was Earnhardt saving that car. How in the world did he do that? That was the best thing about Earnhardt. He left people asking that question many, many times. 24. DaleSrFanForever posted: 08.29.2010 - 9:00 pm Rate this comment: (1) (10) I knew there was a reason I have enjoyed watching Mayfield's extremely promising career go down the drain in possibly the ugliest downward spiral in NASCAR history (other than his annoying personality). This race. Yes, what happened to Dale is something he pulled a few times (not as many as some people seem to think, but he has definitely done it and built a reputation off it). But to those who like to say Mayfield "pulled an Earnhardt" or "out-Earnhardted Earnhardt" are wrong. He simply pulled a maneuver that Dale used. It was fair game and a legitimate victory. Here are the differences: Jeremy won this race, and didn't win again for over 4 years. Dale bumped and spun Terry Labonte at Bristol in '99, won later that year at Talladega, and had a career resurgance in 2000, battling for the championship until the final 1/3 of the year. Dale knocked the shit out of Tim Richmond to win the '85 Bristol Night Race. He would go on to win 6 of the next 9 championships. So for Jeremy, this was undoubtably a career highlight. For Dale, all his instances were, forgive the bad pun, just another bump in the road for him. "Dale: I told him he was number one." lol. That is the funniest part about the entire post race. Jeremy spent 5 minutes in the winner's circle, talking and talking in his squeaky voice, trying to sound like a badass. Dale needed just 5 seconds to show just who truly was the baddest son of a bitch in racing, a legitimate badass. 25. But just because Mayfield didn't win often enough for these posters here, it's a cheap move when he does it. Yeah, that makes perfect sense. I'm not going to deny Earnhardt was a great driver. However, the truth is he did pull a lot of these moves to win races. 27. Matthew Sullivan posted: 06.07.2011 - 2:26 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) What did me in with Mayfield in this race wasn't that he knocked Earnhardt out of the way to win, it was his attitude post-race. He thought he was real hot stuff. After the victory celebration, it dawned on him that he was going to have to race the black #3 again next weekend and he was scared all week until Earnhardt congratulated him at Sears Point. 28. Same here. Like I said, what he did was fair game. But to mock Dale and act like that was the greatest thing ever was really cheap. When Dale won races like this, he didn't brag about it. And for Mayfield to mock Dale using one of his own quotes from a deal that didn't even involve Jeremy was low class. Hopefully for Jeremy he can sit back now and look back at this race to distract himself from the fact that his very promising career turned out to complete mediocrity, marked more by ugly splits (from Penske and Evernham) than anything he ever did on the race track. When he is at home, sitting on his ass because he is banned from NASCAR, maybe this can make him smile for a moment. 29. If I recall correctly, Mayfield said when Earnhardt saw him in the garage the next week, he put him in a friendly headlock. Earnhardt knew it wasn't anything to get that angry about. Some of the posters here seem to have taken it more seriously than he did. And by the way, this race didn't make a difference in the long run. Had Earnhardt ever wrecked Mayfield in a race? I'm not sure. Maybe I'm just coloring this by having NEVER cared for Mayfield (long before the meth) and feeling he wasn't really talented enough to have earned the right to act like he was on Earnhardt and Labonte's level (having won two races at this point...and during the year 2000 after this race, Mayfield predicted that he would win 6-8 races, which I found incredibly cheesy and presumptuous, and quite enjoyed all the stupid stuff that happened to him in the second half of the season, both his fault and not, excluding the injury of course.) 42. So many things happened out of his control that cost him a shot of victory that year. Just off the top of my head... Atlanta 2 - Blown engine while leading Darlington 2 - Pole, led most laps, taken out by lapped car while leading Dover 1 - Blown engine while leading Dover 2 - Pole , blown engine while leading Indy - Qualified 4th, was extremely strong on other 2.5 mile flat track (Pocono) and teammate Rusty battled for the lead, so a good chance of running very well Michigan 1 - Led most laps, leading when red flag for rain comes, blows engine when they get the race back going Phoenix - Ran out of gas on pit road under green while leading and couldn't get going again, lost a lap but came back up to 2nd, likely would have challenged Burton for the win but ran out of time Pocono 2 - Flat tire on last lap while leading Rockingham 2 - Pole, led most laps, forced to change battery with about 30 to go, losing several laps I'm not saying he would have won every single one of those races, but he was denied the chance. His luck was just flat out terrible. When his car wasn't failing him, he was racing for the lead. Despite missing 2 races, he was still 4th in laps led in the entire series and was second only to Rusty in pole positions. 45. Despite the weather, the atmosphere for this particular Monday race was incredible. The stands were packed and there was virtually no security/ushers to control the masses. The finish between Mayfield and Earnhardt sent the place into a frenzy. The fan interactions walking out was hilarious. To cap the day it must have taken us 5 hours to get out of the parking lot as there was no one there to direct traffic. Just a truly epic race experience. Karma would get Mayfield a few weeks later!
