On NBC/TNT, you could have World War 3 break out in the infield and they might be able to find a tail-end replay after the smoke cleared. 12. They were the first network to televise a NA$CAR race live from start-to-finish, and they were the first network to install an onboard camera that provided audio inside the car. Not to mention their legendary long-standing coverage of the Daytona 500 (1979-2000), most of it beiung hosted by commentary legend Ken Squier. Speaking of Ken, does anybody know what he's doing now? The last time I saw him was Speedweeks 2005, working with the SPEED Channel. 15. When the time came to show the starting lineup, every driver in the field was mentioned. Every time. Often these days the broadcasters will talk to a driver on the radio with the starting grid graphics still going. But 2 drivers nearly flipped in Elliot's crash. Elliot himself, and Stacy Compton, who had his passenger's side hit by the spinning 94, and the car rode on two wheels going into turn 3. Neither driver would finish the event. 37. With the halfway mark of the season the team and driver John Andretti switched over to its new Cheerios primary sponsorship from General Mills which remained the team's main sponsor until 2008. STP eventually returned in a more limited capacity a few years later. Mark Martin's #6 Valvoline Ford had a one-off American flag-themed paint job for this race. Kenny Schrader's #36 M&M's Pontiac also had a red, white and blue look for this race. The opening of CBS' coverage of this race was a parody of "Survivor" complete with its theme music, a few clips from that show, messages from its contestants and describing the drivers as 'marooned' in the middle of the Florida coast 'since mid-week.' Survivor's first season debuted in March before this race and the show was a huge hit for CBS leading to a wave of network reality programming and the now very dated intro describing the Pepsi 400 as "Outwit, Outrace, Outlast." 38. RaceFanX posted: 08.22.2012 - 12:57 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) DNQ Sponsor: #13 Robby Gordon- Rocky and Bullwinkle / Menards / Duracell Ultra Gordon was to run a special blue #13 Ford in this race to promote the release of the movie "The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle" which came out the day before this race but didn't make the field. It's actually kind of fitting 'Moose and Squirrel' ended up sidelined; the movie, a live-action film which brought the iconic cartoon characters to life in CGI (and was actually pretty funny), bombed at the box office. 39. I wish you never had that terrible accident at New Hampshire the next week. Also, I feel that Felix Sabates and Robert Yates did not give you the horsepower you truly deserved to be an accomplished racer. If you never died, you would've killed Tony Stewart, Jimmie Johnson and Jeff Gordon now, and would have made them half the racers they are today. 41. They let the pictures tell the story and they made it an important event to watch on TV. I always being excited to watch, now it just seems so routine...maybe I'm getting older but I feel like the product isn't giving me much to be excited about either. Things just seem way too routine now. 52. zuel660 posted: 03.20.2019 - 1:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @51 I think a lot of that had to do with Ken Squier. Sure, he could be mistake prone at times (for some reason he often confused drivers), but he also spoke with dramatic tones and got you genuinely excited about that day's race. Just go back and watch any 80's CBS broadcast on YouTube and you'll see what I mean. Also, without the information blitz of today, there was always something 'new' with each broadcast (driver/car changes, etc) as well. 53. This race started my hatred towards that talentless hack Mike Skinner, for the way he absolutely totally dumped Bill Elliott on that 4th caution. As a hardcore Bill Elliott fan, after seeing that, I was so PISSED OFF ... I was SCREAMING at the television. Bill had one hell of a car in this race, and definitely had a chance to win it, if not for Mike Skinner's stupidity. There is a reason why Skinner never won a points race in Cup, and what he did here is a classic example why. I really wished Bill won a points race during his "McDonald's" years (95-00) ... there were many races Bill could have won, or had a shot at winning during his owner driver days (Three races in 97 alone: Daytona 500, 2nd Michigan race, Southern 500), but it always ended in heartbreak. This race was another one. 55. KentuckyWildcat42 posted: 07.16.2019 - 10:04 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) @54 I remember Bill Elliott having a awesome MacCar that night, was so pissed at Mike Skinner that night that out of all people, he had to take out Awesome Bill on the night he had the car to beat. One year later, Skinner caused the big one once again in this same race 56. Rich posted: 12.29.2020 - 10:42 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Mike Joy, Ned Jarrett and Buddy Baker were the commentators.
