He qualified on the outside pole and ran up front, but was held back due to poor pit stops. Had it not been for that, I think we could have easily seen him in the top-ten, or dare I say it, VICTORY LANE! {sigh} Dreaming while I sleep. :o( 5. But like Darrell said (the poster on this board, not DW himself...lol) he could very well have finished in the top 5 or even won. And I doubt the "let him get the pole" story is true, as that would have been very hard to execute. But it is hard to believe the 66 car actually ran good. 9. Haywood posted: 07.26.2008 - 2:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) of all the 400's i attended this was probably the most memorable. rusty dominated this race and looked like he was finally going to win the brickyard. it also looked like rain might determine the winner because it was overcast for the last half of the race. the day started out burning hot, nearly 100 degrees and clear skies. well about the time bobby & rusty started tangling for the lead, the clouds settled in and the rain neared. amazingly, the last ~300 miles of this one went caution free, resulting in a huge margin of victory that didn't do the battle for the lead justice. i wish one of those mystery cautions had flown late--not because i wanted rusty to win, but because it would have been a good race to the end with fresh tires & a bunched up field. and yeah, the ricky/dw rumors are obviously myth. i heard the same thing in the grandstands during qualifying. i think someone said it over the radio or something and it got spread around. i guess some people are just too gullible to not realize it was a joke. 25. He qualified 4th and probably would have had a good chance at winning considering how well his teammate Rusty ran. 36. He had Jack Sprague ready to take over at Loudon, but he never made it far enough into the race to make the change. Bickle took over at Pocono after Terry drove the first 24 laps. The reason he did not race at Indy was not his leg, but because he was suffering from Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. 37. sk posted: 12.13.2013 - 9:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) According to the broadcast, Kyle Petty did attempt the race in car #44 but failed to qualify, rather than Steve Grissom. 38. It was definitely an interesting race with Darrell being strong but let down by his crew, Jeff Gordon uncharacteristically having problems so early on in a crash (which was hard to fathom during that late 90's- early 00's timeframe), and a great run for Jerry Nadeau with a top 5. 46. DOminate 1999 Daytona 500 only to lose. This was typical for Rusty in 2000. Despite the 4 wins, he dominated a lot of races only to come up short. 48. Compton is credited with leading a lap in the standings, but Burton is credited with leading lap 18 in the lap leader breakdown. Can somebody please straighten this out? 55. Mile501 posted: 07.26.2020 - 6:11 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @54 - I believe Stacy Compton led lap 18, after taking a quick peek at the broadcast. When the whole field comes to pit road, you can see a green car at the back stay out. Plus, the next time they show the running order after the restart, Compton is shown in 42nd place, while Burton is 9th. Burton could not have lead that lap and still be in 9th place after the restart. 56. Anonymous posted: 07.26.2020 - 7:52 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) 54, if you watch part of the video around the first pit stop, the pit reporter and announcers talk about Jeff Burton taking two tires, but Rusty Wallace still came out of the pits with the lead, so I'd say Stacy Compton actually led that lap. You can also see on the video what looks like Compton keeping to his right, possibly to stay out for a lap. Additionally, the points awarded for the race indicate that Compton led a lap, while Burton was awarded sixth place points without five extra for leading a lap. 57. Mile501 posted: 04.01.2021 - 1:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I see several comments from long ago saying Darrell Waltrip could have had a better finish if not for poor pit stops, but that is not accurate. Waltrip had a surprisingly strong car in this race, but his problem was restarts, not pit stops. Under the first caution, he took 2 tires (as did many teams) and moved up from 6th to 4th. But he dropped back quickly on the ensuing restart and was 23rd by the time the second caution came out. The green-flag pit stops that took place around the halfway point provide another example. Waltrip had climbed back to 19th before the cycle of pit stops began; once the cycle had completed, he was up to 14th. Clearly, his pit crew did a solid job during this race; he just tended to lose spots on restarts (especially the first one) but was better on the longer runs. It's a good thing for him that the race went green for the last 114 laps; if there had been a lot of cautions, he probably wouldn't have finished as well. Also, an interesting note about his brother: During the broadcast, it was announced that Michael Waltrip had signed a one-year agreement to return to Jim Smith's #7 in 2001. About six weeks later, Waltrip announced an amicable separation from Smith's team to drive the DEI #15 in 2001 instead. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
