I still haven't seen a full clip of Tony and Gordo's incident or their "discussion" afterwards. 2. At the time, this was also Robby Gordon's best career finish. 4. Darrell posted: 10.02.2005 - 4:14 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) This was the first Cup race I ever attended. Great memories of craning my neck to see Park celebrating on the roof of his car. It's also worth mentioning this was the best race of a dismal year for Wally Dallenbach and the 75 team. 5. Park led by about 7 car lengths with a handful of laps and with about 3-5 laps left Martin had his best chances to catch him but never did. From the sound of it Park had the race within his grasp by the final lap as long as he didn't make any mistakes. 6. DEIFan16 posted: 08.10.2007 - 4:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I have to say even though I am a Junior fan this race had to be one of the funniest races of his rookie year. Apparently he loses 3rd gear after his first pit stop, then he spun out in turn 2 cause he lost 3rd gear and the gears locked! And he ended up landing near a Budweiser sign. "Well, at least we got some on-screen time for our sponsor" (Driver #8 pg 195) Then they see that the shift linkage is broken, a part that almost never fails. They fix it, and hes back on track 10 laps down. They come back in later and fix more, leaving him 20 laps down, 20 laps after returning, he gets stuck in first gear! XD So he limped back to the pits in 1st gear! I have to say thats a funny story, even though he finished bad. 16. adamal82 posted: 09.28.2007 - 1:24 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Tom Hubert filled in for Jeremy Mayfield 17. For years the formula was owner's points, race winners & past champions, and the postmark on the entry blank. In 2000 they changed the last part of that formula to the qualifying draw instead of the postmark (1-35 on owner's points, 36 past champion, 37-43 qualifying draw). Needless to say after the part-time teams of Ron Fellows and Todd Bodine made the race based on the draw and full-time teams like the 32, 71, 11, and 90 went home, NASCAR changed the rules for 2001 and went to qualifying attempts instead of qualifying draw for the last part of the rainout formula. 23. Fast-forward to Bristol in April of '01, coming to the checkers (when this kind of thing is expected to happen, not the first quarter of the race), Gordon doesn't give an inch when Tony tries to keep Jeff from taking third. Tony ends up in the wall, tightening Stewart's panties significantly. 28. He'd suffered a concussion at Daytona in July, and started having dizzy spells during the week leading up to Indy, so he stepped away for a couple of races for safety reasons. 39. sk posted: 10.22.2016 - 6:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Mike Bliss had a great rise through the field and had made it up to around 15th when his engine fell apart. Nadeau's troubles took place with Jerry firmly in the top-5 as well, and of course Fellows was on track to contend for the win when he had engine issues in the opening third of the race. Steve Park however drove masterfully, and his car went the distance. It couldn't have been easy to hold off a man with 10 top-5s at the Glen in 12 tries, but with Mark Martin bearing down on him hard Park never let him have a lane, and sped off to a well-earned victory. 40. Of course Jeff and Tony Stewart went at it over their scuffle and it started Jeff's downfall on the road courses in Cup. 44. Anonymous posted: 03.25.2020 - 1:36 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) That "scuffle" bent the steering on Gordon's car so severely that it's a miracle he even stayed in the race. Also, "downfall on the road courses"? What on Earth? 45. gary24fan posted: 03.25.2020 - 2:36 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @44: BadBooking is obviously an Earnhardt fan. They will twist the stats and numbers in ways you wouldn't think mathematically possible. Just look at his last win at 'Dega in 2000. Every time they tell the story he came from further back and with fewer laps to go than the last time they told the story. By this time next year they'll be telling us he came from 10 laps back to win as the cars were bearing down on the checkered. 46. Mile501 posted: 04.01.2021 - 3:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I don't say this to take anything away from Steve Park, who had a good car and did a great job in this race, but he certainly benefited from the problems that a lot of the usual road course contenders encountered. Because qualifying was rained out, Said and Pruett didn't get to race. Jeff Gordon, Stewart, and Earnhardt were all out of contention before 2 laps were even completed. Also because of how the field was set, Robby Gordon, Fellows, and Dallenbach were among those with strong cars who started at the back and never could quite make it to the front. Rusty Wallace's car was never the same after he drove off into the gravel trap, and Nadeau was perhaps Park's biggest competition but had to go behind the wall after losing third gear. That left Martin as Park's main challenger, while many of the other top finishers were drivers like Jeff Burton, Bobby Labonte, and Dale Jarrett who were high in the point standings and took advantage of the qualifying rain-out (along with having solid, clean races) to finish well even though they aren't known as being great road racers. 48. Mile501 posted: 04.01.2021 - 3:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) "Too bad we can't have soft walls on the ovals that we run on. Maybe someday we will." - Bob Jenkins after showing replays of Jimmie Johnson's Busch Series crash here a couple of months before. There was also an interesting occurrence after the second round of pit stops. A NASCAR official told Ward Burton's team that the left rear tire was missing a lugnut, even though Tommy Baldwin insisted that all the lugs were on. The argument continued for a few laps when a caution came out. Finally they worked out a deal to bring Burton's car in and check the lugs--if they were all on, then NASCAR would let him get his 5th position back. Unfortunately for him, the official was right, and Burton dropped back to 33rd on that restart. Mike Bliss also had a solid, top-15 run going before his engine blew. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
