That goes to show how good the 24 team was back in those days. 8. BON GORDON posted: 06.22.2010 - 3:07 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) The 24 team wasnt that great in 2000. He got lucky because of all the cautions. He lost a cylinder past halfway. It was impressive to finish 23rd though. 9. Rusty won this race with his alternate Miller Lite and Harley-Davidson paint scheme he ran for a couple races in 2000, this might have been the only time he won with a special paint scheme. Matt Kenseth ran a reverse black-with-yellow paint scheme in this event. 12. RaceFanX posted: 12.23.2019 - 8:53 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @24 Compton was coming off a qualifying crash at Michigan but as noted in #13 he had to sit this one out after he tripped and fell while playing a game of racquetball at his local gymnasium, breaking his collarbone. Compton and the team called up Hillin to have him on standby since they thought Compton would be able to qualify and start the race to get the points but wouldn't be able to stand up to 500 laps at Bristol with that injury. Ultimately after qualifying Compton stepped aside and they let Hillin run the whole race in what turned out to be his final Cup start. This was Hillin's only Cup start after he lost his regular ride early in the 1997 season but he was still a familiar face at the track since he was racing in the NASCAR Busch Series at the time. The team brought him in because of his veteran experience racing in Cup. Interestingly at the time of Compton's injury racquetball was cited as being a very popular hobby among NASCAR drivers. This was because the game requires extremely quick reflexes to play well in addition to players always being in motion; making it a great way to stay in shape. 26. Mile501 posted: 04.16.2021 - 2:14 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Championship rivals Bobby Labonte and Dale Jarrett both had terrible qualifying efforts, starting side-by-side in row 16 and pitting on the backstretch. They both steadily worked their way forward, though, and both were in the top 15 by lap 200. But when the #9 spun on lap 320, Labonte got turned around by Skinner in the aftermath and lost a lap which he never could regain. Robby Gordon relief drove for Brett Bodine during the latter part of the race. Bodine was dealing with heat exhaustion. Dave Blaney was also called to be on standby for Bobby Labonte, who was dealing with cramping and numbness issues, but Labonte said he was determined "to finish the race if it killed" him, and he did persevere to the finish. Ward Burton tried a 2-tire stop on the last caution which briefly got him the lead, but his car began to handle so terribly with just 2 fresh tires that he went from the lead to a lap down in the last 40 lap run. Ted Musgrave, who had taken over the renumbered Ganassi/Sabates #01 after Kenny Irwin's tragic death, had a great top 10 run going (and was as high as 4th around lap 300), but he was turned around by Dale Earhnardt Jr. with less than 100 laps to go and lost a lap. Bobby Hamilton had one of the best cars in this race and drove up into the top 5 before cutting down a tire and pitting just before a caution came out, trapping him 2 laps down. His car was badly damaged during the last caution as he was trying to get one of his laps back and got squeezed between the wall and the #12 car. Robert Pressley also had a strong car but an up-and-down race. He was penalized a lap for pitting outside his box early in the race, but he got his lap back after the 133 lap green-flag run when almost everyone besides him pitted under green. He was running 12th around lap 340, when Jimmy Spencer spun him around, and he was subsequently involved in 2 more spins. The last time, his fuel cell erupted in flames, and his night was over. 27.
