Then Jason Jarrett had one in Busch Qualifying at Bristol and took one of the biggest hits I'd seen there. Then Kenny Wallace had one at Martinsville on the second or third lap after qualifying second. Amazingly, his destroyed car was repaired and he managed to finish the race. Then of course came May 12 and July 7. Thank God for kill switches, HANS devices, and SAFER Barriers. 13. dalejrfan15 posted: 06.17.2006 - 2:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) AND HERE BURTON COMES!iNTO VICTORY LANE!So Burton...how do you feel? It stuck down the front straight, and Kyle took a big hit down in turn 1. 16. biffle16 posted: 01.13.2007 - 10:14 pm Rate this comment: (1) (1) It was boring, but this just shows everybody what Roush Racing is made of. 17. I had never seen anyone lead a race flag to flag before and it was fun to watch Burton defend his position from Labonte. And the race was hardly without passing. Rudd finished third after starting 19th, Gordon finished 6th after starting 18th, and Andretti finished 7th after starting 31st. I think some people here are just spoiled. Haywood posted: 02.28.2009 - 5:39 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) This race should fix the lead changes. There are 0 lead changes if the guy who leads the first time across the line leads every single lap thereafter. On lap 0 (when the green comes out) there is NO driver who has led a lap. Therefore, whoever leads lap 1 gets credit for the first lap led. The pole sitter is never technically a race leader unless he leads lap 1. Therefore, there was no lead change by NASCAR scoring and there should be 0 for the race. 34. mjb posted: 04.24.2009 - 5:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was a pretty exciting finish. Evan posted: 12.13.2014 - 6:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was a boring race, but at least after this NASCAR made an engine kill switch to halt the cars if they are going into a corner too hard or a throttle get stuck because if that thing gets stuck, the driver is just a passenger. As far as safety, I am happy for the softer walls and pit crew helmets and kill switches, those are productive and wise changes. What I am not a fan of, is actually changing the whole look of the race car. The COT was planned for years but it just made racing boring, and many drivers could not get the car to drive, Kyle Busch won more races in the COT, but he'd still say the thing sucked and he is right, it did. But moving over to the Gen 6 platform is a start but I don't think we are done yet with changing the body styles, I think there will be a few more changes and hopefully get them looking like they were in this generation, more sleaker and aerodynamic, not like footballs in 2003, with the wider shape. 48. mister83 posted: 06.29.2015 - 9:20 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) That isn't always true Petty43. I read at least one place that it actually was one of Irwin's helmets, but I don't think that's correct. I'll be honest, I could see somebody going wire-to-wire in a road race some day. Would depend on strategy, etc. of course, and I don't anticipate it happening but I wouldn't be shocked if it happened, basically. I probably watched about 40 laps total of the two Loudon races that season. I bought a Racing Champions Kenny Irwin car (and a Wally Dallenbach car) the day before Kenny got killed and it just took everything out of me. Felt like I was at the bottom of the ocean that weekend. I didn't even care that Tony won the race or that he ran so badly in this one. Actually he didn't run so bad, according to his book they had a good enough car to do some passing but pitted three times under green only to have the caution come out all three times and cost them a lap each. 50. nascarman posted: 07.20.2015 - 8:36 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Here's an article talking about Stewart wearing the helmet. http://www.motorsport.com/nascar-cup/news/irwin-memory-honored-by-stewart-at-loudon/ 51. Fast-forward to the present day, and those kids - Thad Moffitt and Harrison Burton, respectively - have followed in their families' footsteps and embarked on racing careers. As of this comment, Thad & Harrison have raced against each other several times, with Harrison coming out on top in 7 of the 8 occasions. 63. This day was the last time that the network aired this or any cup race at the magic mile as the network had aired the first eight summer events at the track from 1993 to 2000. TNT and NBC would take over the coverage duties the following year. 64. Evan posted: 03.26.2021 - 7:41 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This would be Jeff Burton's last win for sponsor EXIDE Batteries. They would leave towards the end of the season and make way for sponsor CITGO SUPERGARD which would sponsor Burton for the remainder of the 2000 season up until 2003 when they left for a hiatus, but they did sponsor the 38 car a little bit in recent years. EXIDE later became a sponsor for Johnny Benson's 23 Bill Davis Racing Toyota that won a Camping World Truck title. CITGO would still sponsor Elliott Sadler in 2000 but there would end up being CITGO cars out on the track until the final race where Elliott switched over to Motorcraft. 65. It was a prelude to an interview with Steve Park who had recently scored his first career win. 3 of those drivers (M Waltrip, Benson, and Craven) would go on to score their first career victory within the next two seasons. The other 7 (Mast, Musgrave, Dallenbach, Little, K Wallace, Pressley, and Skinner) would never win a Cup race, though Wallace and Pressley would each earn a 2nd-place finish in 2001. --- Having just re-watched this race, it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected. Loudon never really produces a huge amount of passing, but I don't think this race was any worse than a typical race there. There may have only been 1 leader, but there was plenty of passing throughout the pack. And handling through the corners was very important. Several of the drivers who finished off the lead lap lost laps by pitting just before a caution came out. That actually happened to Tony Stewart twice, after he had worked his way up to 8th early in the race. Jerry Nadeau had a great top-5 run all race long but was caught up in a late-race accident. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
