Rudd appeared to have the race won late, but then NASCAR threw one of their infamous "competition cautions", which allowed Labonte and Mayfield to overtake him. 2. The 3 car was capable of winning until a broken shock took him out of contention of winning. Nonetheless, the 11th place finish shows how great Earnhardt was because a lesser driver wouldn't have finished that well with a broken shock at Charlotte, where handling is so key. 3. My uncle, a huge Earnhardt fan, died the day after this race. 4. dalejrfan15 posted: 06.17.2006 - 2:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) im very sorry to hear that..but think of him in a better place...swapping stories with big E at the pearly gates. 5. Richard posted: 10.12.2006 - 7:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) i was at this race sitting across from the entrance to pit road. I heard the discussions on the radio about the mystery caution, but that's not true. Andy Houston in the 96 car hit the wall earlier int he race damaging his car. When he came in for a pit stop late in the race one of his brakes blew and a big piece of it was laying at the entrance to pit road. hence the need for a caution. This is also the race that TBS tried the side by side coverage for the first and last time. 6. James W. McLaughlin posted: 03.25.2007 - 1:22 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Side by side coverage? What's that? 7. Matthew Sullivan posted: 04.12.2007 - 1:45 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) It's the same thing as what ESPN does with their IRL coverage; showing the race in a smaller window while commercials are played in a bigger window. 8. biffle16 posted: 06.16.2007 - 12:11 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Man, Mayfield must have been very happy to finish 2nd. Coming into this race, he had a streak of 6 straight DNF's. Alas, he would blow his engine the next week at Talladega. 9. Was this the race where Elliott or Jeff got confused and pulled into the other's pit? I know it was sometime around here, and I seem to remember it being at Lowe's. 12. James W. Jeff Burton and his #99 team lined up Citgo as their new sponsor for 2001 before this race and the deal apparently included the rest of 2000 IIRC thus the switch. Exide Batteries was looking to cut back on their NASCAR sponsorship, they left the sport after ending their sponsorship with Burton. 15. The sponsor on Andy Houston's # 96 Ford was McDonald's / Happy Meal. 21. Scott25 posted: 06.06.2016 - 11:37 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The first race I attended. I definitely don't remember it being THAT exciting (46 lead changes!) but I probably was too sulky to pay much attention after Nadeau dropped out. 22. Burton was held for 15 seconds as the penalty. 24. RaceFanX posted: 12.07.2016 - 8:20 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I miss TBS' coverage somewhat. That's very rare, even at the restricor plate races. 27. During that race, the commentators mentioned that the new tire, which according to them had much more stagger, was one major factor in having good competition and so many lead changes during this race at Charlotte. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
