Dale Earnhardt went from 18th to 1st in the last 5 laps-not something many drivers can say often, now is it? 2. It was the last time the legendary driver would lead a lap under green flag conditions. 3. HomeDepotKid posted: 09.12.2004 - 3:35 am Rate this comment: (1) (1) Yep. To have Kenny push him up there from outside the top 15 with 5 laps to go and battle Dale Jr. and Skinner for the lead. By the way, Dale Jr. was able to come from 11th to 1st in the final 5 laps of the 2004 Talladega fall race. So, like father, like son. 5. de man posted: 01.17.2005 - 8:21 pm Rate this comment: (0) (1) last rcr plate win 6. RCR's got a great plate program(2nd to DEI), and they'll be back in Daytona or Talladega's victory lane soon. 7. Ted Lipka posted: 02.28.2005 - 6:39 pm Rate this comment: (2) (2) Childress' plate program hasn't looked that great the last few years. Harvick seems to always have a good run at Talladega, but the chips never seem to fall his way at Daytona. You guys make such a huge deal out of his eighteenth to first run, but this is plate racing. It's a different beast. You can gain five or six positions in a lap or lose fifteen; it's not like real racing. It's a traffic jam at one hundred and ninety miles per hour. Kenny Wallace started last and was up to eleventh in last year's fall Talladega race after around seven or eight laps, so it's not like gaining a lot of positions at Talladega in a sparse few laps is not possible. Because this was Earnhardt's last win, it's simply overglorified, in my opinion. 8. With 2 laps to go, I thought that Mike Skinner was finally going to get his first Winston Cup win, but in the way he did best, Dale Earnhardt took it from him on the outside. Dale Jr. was in contention at the white flag, but he fell from a "podium finish", as they say in Formula One, to 14th. I'm not exactly sure what started that big wreck at the finish line. This was also the first Winston Cup race that rookie Mike Bliss led, and his first Top 10, finishing 9th. Tony Fan #20: the only reason this race "sucked" was because Tony Stewart finished 27th, lost 45 points on the leader, and fell from 5th to 6th in the standings. 13. This was a spectacular race, capped off by an incredible comeback victory that I seriously doubt too many other drivers could have pulled off. Dale showed one last time before his death why he is considered by many as NASCAR's greatest driver. 16. The draft suddenly became so effective that impediment to passing was eliminated, and the highest number of leaders (21) and lead changes (49) in years resulted; it became only the second race in NASCAR history where half the field led. The spoiler in the frantic final five laps was John Andrteti; storming into the lead with four to go, Andretti hung on desperately to the outside draft; Earnhardt caught him but could do nothing with him, then punted him sideways in the trioval to gain more spots. 20. During a caution, Burton's crew saw Sadler coming down pit road and jumped across the wall, but Jeff Burton was a few cars behind. Burton got held one lap because his crew jumped across the wall too early, and he never got the lap back. 33. Mike posted: 11.06.2007 - 6:04 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) The reason that both cars were painted the same is that Exide ended their sponsorship of the #99 several races before the end of the season. Citgo had already signed with Roush for '01, so they put their colors on the 99 starting in this race. Since they were still under contract with the Wood Brothers, they sponsored both cars for the rest of the season. 34. And Burton actually did get the lap back he lost because of his crew jumping the wall too soon. He, Ted Musgrave and Rick Mast hadn't made their second green flag stop when the first caution came out, and they would've gone a lap down had they pitted under green. The reason Burton finished a lap down was because he, Tony Stewart, Johnny Benson and Michael Waltrip all made their final pit stops under green, and then Hamilton and Martin wrecked, so they were all trapped a lap down. 36. Little was brought back for one final ride in the John Deere #97 Ford Taurus because back in 2000 a rookie driver could only run seven races in a season and maintain eligibility for rookie of the year the next year. Dale Earnhardt coming from 18th with four laps to go coming to the white with the lead and holding on to win made #7 on the list. Impressive. Also what made it fitting was Kenny Mayne announced it last night. Mayne interviewed Earnhardt on the SportsCenter set at Daytona in 1998 after Earnhardt finally won the Daytona 500. Tiger Woods winning the Masters in 2019 was #1. I guess because of all his injuries he dealt with the last five years and overcame them. The Cavs coming back to from 3-1 down to the Warriors in 2016 was up there along with the Red Sox coming from behind to win in the 2004 ALCS against the Yankees after being down 3-0, and the Patriots coming back to win against the Falcons in the Super Bowl after being down 28-3. 90. The big announcement was that they were going to race a #3 Corvette together in the 2001 Rolex 24 at Daytona. 91.
