Tony Stewart wins the first two races at Homestead as of the 2005 Ford 400 at Homestead, Joe Gibbs and Jack Roush have won all but one Homestead race. 4. Steve posted: 10.27.2006 - 4:31 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) When I said that Winston Cup was slowly turning into Nextel Cup, I meant the series started going to modern tracks like Las Vegas and California, and the field size increased, along with some other changes which caused more difficult competition. From 1997 to 2001 there were at least 40 full-time teams in Winston Cup! I failed to mention that in that small era Rusty Wallace and Jeremy Mayfield were also a couple of the guys to beat (they were teammates, too). Towards the end of that time, Mike Skinner, Ricky Rudd, and Tony Stewart were also constant threats for the win. Casey Atwood scored his first Winston Cup Top 10 in this race. 6. Darrell posted: 11.24.2006 - 5:07 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Thank you Steve. I'm a huge fan of Bobby despite his recent troubles. Taking away Jimmy Makar and replacing him with stiffs like Brandon Thomas and Steve Addington was a big mistake on JGR's part. Bobby Hamilton Jr. makes his Cup debut. 7. biffle16 posted: 03.25.2007 - 5:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I agree. Steve Addington basically ruined Bobby's career. :( 8. Evan posted: 12.13.2011 - 10:08 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) * 2nd race broadcast by NBC if I'm not mistaken. NASCAR would be full time on NBC a year later and would go on until 2006...the final year and also the final network Benny Parsons would work for. * Jeremy Mayfield scores a second place finish but would have an awful season with penalties and engine failures, he had 11 DNFs that year and it was also the final year of the Penske-Kranefuss combo, which sunk Mayfield's effort because he got along better with Kranefuss than he did Penske. * Casey Atwood had a great run, in retrospect though, his stock went through the roof at that time and Ray Evernham gave hima shot. The car was basically ran out of Bill Ellott's shops and Ray took control of Elliott's team during the year to fund this effort and Bill's. * Last time the two Citgo cars were ran with Elliott Sadler and Jeff Burton. Elliott Sadler would drive the Motorcraft Ford at Atlanta and Citgo was already on Burton's car. * Kyle Petty misses the race in his son's car who passed away in 2000. As does Ted Musgrave who drove Kenny Irwin's car which then was 01. 16. I think about this time of this race they had one where kids could build a replica of Tony's racecar (in a more solid orange scheme than the somewhat reversed white with 'scribble' orange he ran here) by hammering in white pegs to the car to hold the turnable wheels in place. Michael Waltrip was blackflagged by NASCAR for blowing smoke from his car before the race began for a mechanical issue that caused him to put a little fluid down on the backstretch. It was fixable and he did get to start the race. This was Mark Martin's 400th consecutive NASCAR Winston Cup start dating back to the late 1980s. Wally Dallenbach, Jr's #75 RotoZip Tools Ford had a nice black and hot red paint scheme in this race designed by a fan in a contest, Mike Dexter of Columbus, Ohio had the winning entry. 17. Eric posted: 01.28.2016 - 10:59 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I believe Gordon7timechamp is wrong on Earnhardt being the all time king of taking provisionals. I became a fan of NASCAR in 1993 and = I remembered Darrell abusing the Provisional system worse than Dale did. My reasoning is the fact Darrell Waltrip took 20 provisionals in 1998 and forced NASCAR to change the provisional rules. Darrell Waltrip from 1996 to his retirement used up over 50 Provisionals. Dale Sr. took half as much from the same time period. Darrell actually had a worse starting average than Dale did in the years I starting watching NASCAR matter of fact. I know it is hard to believe a driver that took 59 career poles abusing the Provisional system, but that is true with Darrell Waltrip. Darrell starting in 1993, averaged at 20th or worse starting spot in a season except for 1995. 23. Eric posted: 01.28.2016 - 11:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I could be wrong about provisional system for Earnhardt and Darrell Waltrip because I used the 1998 Provisional rules. What I am sure about is the amount of Provisionals Darrell Waltrip used in 1998 and caused NASCAR to have a limited amount of Provisionals as a result. 24. nascarman posted: 11.01.2017 - 7:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Interesting deal made by NBC for this race. As Benny Parsons was scheduled to work for them in 2001, NBC reached a deal with ABC to allow Benny to come to the network early and serve as commentator for this race. If ABC would let Benny work this race, NBC would give ABC replay rights to Tiger Woods' victory in the U.S. Open, broadcast on NBC in June 2000. 25. RaceFanX posted: 07.21.2018 - 9:05 am Rate this comment: (2) (0) The Pettys announced before the season began they would return to racing Dodges in 2001 as one of the first teams with the new Intrepid stock cars. By this penultimate race in the season several of the teams that would switch to Dodge were already downplaying their current brandds or playing up their new one. Casey Atwood's #19 for instance had no Ford branding on it at all. 28. JSPorts posted: 07.21.2018 - 9:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) I wonder if that's ever happened before (someone sponsored by a different make than the one they drove.) I'm sure it has sometime, but it seems quite odd and unlikely. 29. possum posted: 07.21.2018 - 10:34 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) @28 - just for accuracy, Atwood's sponsor in that race was Motorola (my then employer). I don't think any of the Dodges-to-be had any markings showing Chrysler affiliation, they just didn't have Ford (or whatever) logos either. To your main question, I don't think anyone has ever carried sponsorship for a brand competing in NASCAR other than the one they drove. I think that would be a career killing move. It seems to me that back in the day when cars carried local business sponsorship there've been cases of cars carrying dealer sponsorship for non-NASCAR brands. I suspose one could look at Cummins diesel as a similar situation - while that engine is associated with Dodge, they have sponsored cars with other brands. 30. possum posted: 07.21.2018 - 10:38 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Ha, that's what I get for not reading the whole thread - Petty's car being part sponsored by Dodge. That's probably the only case (and he didn't make the race, anyway). 31. In contrast, the 1950s and 1970s combined have produced 30 different championship seasons with 12 different drivers. 32. Yahboi posted: 09.19.2019 - 9:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Interestingly enough, one of Bobby's only two top 5 point finishes was a championship, although he did have five finishes from 6th-10th. The other came in 99. Kind of funny that he had just two. But, if you win a championship, in my eyes, you're one of the best. 33. US Open did use to air on ABC until after the 94 event. The Other was I think you might Recognize the song in the intro and the band who sang it cause they had a 3 year relationship with NBC's NASCAR Coverage with another familiar tune that was used for a CBS race at Michigan in 1998. I guess the BP-ABC NBC deal was similar to the Al Michaels- Oswald the Lucky Rabbit deal that sent Al to NBC. so Oswald could be part of the Disney family. 36.
