Jeff's first win of 2001 on his way to the Championship. It was a
No-Bull race for Gordon & lucky fan. I was there...it was awesome!

There was a cool tribute to #3 in turn four and Harvick (with the black
#29) ran in the top ten all day.

This was not the last No Bull 5 race, but it was Jeff Gordon's last
million-dollar bonus. Gordon's reputation for being at his best when the
most ($$$) is on the line is not entirely unfounded as the Vegas win
marked his fifth million-dollar check from Winston (4 No Bull 5 bonuses
and the Winston Million in 1997).

WHAT!They did'nt wear the HANS device the week before! It could have cost
the lives of Dale and Dale because that was a hard hit with junior. It
was erily similar to the 500 crash.

Robert Pressley was in the top-ten in points despite not having a
top-ten at the time. Amazing bit of consistency there.

Kenny Wallace had a chance to win the No Bull 5 money in this race
despite driving for an unsponsored team. Sensing a good opportunity,
Hills Bros. Coffee (who sponsored the #27 in the Daytona 500 after their
car failed to qualify) came aboard to sponsor Kenny. Didn't do him any
good, he finished 31st.

Even after what happened in the 500, Junior didn't wear a HANS device
for quite some time. It took a concerted effort by Jeff Gordon, Dale
Jarrett and I'm sure some others to convince Junior to start wearing it.

daeno if they'd survive them without it!

There was some hype geared toward Dale Earnhardt Jr possibly winning
this race (when is there not), mainly because his other two teammates
(Michael Waltrip and Steve Park) had won the first two races of the
season and people wondered if DEI could go 3-for-3. It didn't work,
Junior was a non-factor.

He would have to wait for the 2004 Daytona 500 to make his debut.

First time Harvick ran his trademark red number 29 which would be
incorporated into his paint schemes until 2011 where he switched to Bud
and white numbers. Also first time Ford had a considerable amount of
cars not finish in the top 10 at Vegas. This race also broke the
stranglehold Roush had on this place with Mark martin winning in 1998,
Jeff Burton 1999 and 2001, Alas, Matt Kenseth would return Roush's
stranglehold on this place when he won in 2003 and 2004. The new config
is better than this one, also the COT is better for banked courses not
these flat tracks, I felt the 2001-2004 cars were better for the types
of tracks.

Yeah, the Penske cars got together. Craven blew up and left some oil on
the track. Brett Bodine hit the wall in turn 4. Jeremy slipped up the
track in turn 1 and into Rusty, likely from hitting the oil as well.

The Indy cars had been using a version of the HANS for years that had
been available to NASCAR for quite sometime, that is a load of crap.

This was the first Cup race I ever went to. Stayed in the motorhome lot
outside turn 3. I was 15 years old and still in shock from losing Dale.
Many others were as well as there was just an odd mood in the motorhome
lot. People telling Dale stories and some teary eyes.

Also, a correction. Harvick team the white and black car here. Atlanta
was the first race for the white and red/orange scheme. Yes, he ran good
all day. Top 15 most of the day. Very quiet but good run.

Question, were there only 4 No Bull cars this race? Earnhardt was
supposed to be eligible here from his win at Talladega but I can't
remember if they added someone else our just left it at 4.

car to run for the No Bull.

And how in the flying hell did Bodine and Hornaday come in the Top 10,
Bodine with a Top 5?!?!

#17 - Harvick still had the black 29 numeral in this race.

Todd Bodine may have won this race had he had better pit work. Pit stops
killed him all day long.

Really good race for three truck series legends who never quite made it
in cup. Todd Bodine finished fifth after leading 44 laps in probably his
best cup race ever, Ron Hornaday (the Richard Petty of the truck series)
got his only top ten finish in cup, and Johnny Benson, who has had a bit
more success than the other two in cup but still not very much, came
home fourth after leading five laps.

Jeremy Mayfield often tells the story of this race in interviews. The
caution came out due to a wreck in turn 1, and his spotter came on the
radio to tell him to back it down. But at the time, he and Rusty were
side by side, and due to their teammate rivalry neither one of them was
going to back off. So they raced each other flat out to the caution and
then kept going past the finish line, even though they both knew the
wreck was in turn 1. Jeremy then proceeded to slip in the fluid on the
track and take himself and Rusty out of the race. It remains one of his
biggest regrets.

I have recently started re-watching races from the 2001 season, in
order, when I have some extra time. This race is a classic example of
how things used to be. There were a half-dozen different drivers who
spend a decent amount of time in the lead. Cars moved forward and
backward through the field as the track changed throughout the race.
There were no artificial breaks and no unnecessary cautions--just good,
hard racing, and a number of drivers who looked like they could win
until it became more clear in the closing laps that the winner would be
Gordon.

Many of the key players in the previous race at Rockingham weren't in
the battle for the lead at Las Vegas, including Jeff Gordon, who led the
most laps at Rockingham and did win at Las Vegas but ran midpack early
on and slowly worked his way up, not leading until lap 225.

Travis Carter's organization, particularly Todd Bodine, had an
outstanding race and earned their 5th and 10th place finishes on speed.
Rookie Ron Hornaday also ran well all day and finished 9th--no one knew
at the time that would be his only top-10 finish. The top 9 finishers
included 9 different owners.

Ricky Rudd had a fast car but had a tire problem early and got stuck a
lap down. He raced hard all race long but was never able to make up the
lap. Still, he ended up with a top 20 finish. It's okay that it was hard
for him to make up his lap--it made for an interesting story to follow,
and his problems (along with those of a few other top drivers) gave
other teams a chance to get better finishes.

Since it was still a fairly new track, teams weren't totally sure which
pit/tire strategy would work best, which also made things more
interesting. Short-pitting was used towards the end of the race, but
teams that pitted early faced the risk of getting caught a lap down if a
caution came out, and lost laps were difficult to make up.

Finally, a look at the finishing order shows a wide variety of drivers,
from regular championship contenders to those who had unimpressive Cup
careers, throughout the field from front to back. The same drivers
weren't finishing up front every week.
