It is the last time that the Wood Brothers won, and probably will ever win, without help from others. (True, Trevor Bayne won the Daytona 500 this year in the #21 car, but that was such a bizarre race and set of circumstances that put him there, a huge early crash, two-car tandem drafts, which he was the best at that day by far, other maladies knocking out most of the other contenders, and a stupid mistake by the driver that would probably have won if not for that.) This will probably be the final race that the Wood Brothers will ever win on their own merit. 40. Schroeder51 posted: 12.23.2011 - 11:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Todd Bodine had a top 5 car throughout much of the early stages and ran as high as 2nd for a while, but later an ill-handling car caused him to fall back in the back and he eventually blew a tire and pounded the wall, causing the last caution for debris that came off his car. 41. Sadler then took the lead when Harvick had a flat tire. 52. SK posted: 09.06.2018 - 8:05 am Rate this comment: (1) (0) Sadler had steadily worked his way from 38th to 15th over the first 400 or so laps before leapfrogging to 2nd on Pat Tryson's pit call, and he'd been in close proximity to numerous wrecks but avoided trouble every time. He had just passed Jeff Burton for 20th a handful of laps before the #99 shot into the wall and collected the new driver who trailed him on the racetrack...teammate and pole sitter Mark Martin. Also, not only was Andretti strong that day but Kyle Petty also seemed to have a top-10 car early, getting up into the top-5 even before a sour motor ended his day early. 54. Mile501 posted: 09.18.2019 - 2:56 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I randomly came across this interesting news tidbit from the date of this race: Jeff Burton would like to set the record straight. There is no pending breakup between himself and owner Jack Roush, leading him to drive for Richard Childress Racing. "The truth of the matter is that we have not had one conversation about me driving for him in the future," Burton said Saturday morning. "I love where I work. I have a great relationship with Jack Roush. He said the only problem he has with me is that I might want his job, and he might not be willing to give that job up just yet. I intend to be in Roush Racing long after I drive. . . . I have no desire to leave." A little more than 3 years later, Jeff Burton would leave Roush to drive for Childress. RaceFanX posted: 09.18.2019 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I think it has since come out that Dale Earnhardt wanted Jeff Burton to rake over the #3 Chevrolet from him after his retirement (he was looking to run a few more years and make 2003 a farewell tour before his death). Perhaps those Burton to RCR rumors back then were related to that. However, given how strong Roush was in this era (he would have a good year in 2001 even if his teammates struggled) it's easy to see why Burton wouldn't be openly looking to jump ship. 57. possum posted: 09.18.2019 - 7:35 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @55 - it should be noted, tho, that Burton didn't leave Roush of his own desire. Roush was having problems finding sponsorship (as is not infrequently the case with Roush's teams), and after running 6 or 7 races with no sponsor he announced he couldn't afford it and would shut the team down. Childress, who'd been trying out a variety of drivers, jumped at the chance to take Burton when he became available. Roush, meanwhile, magically found enough money in the back of his wallet to run another 8 unsponsored races with Carl Edwards, leading many to think he'd never intended to shut the team down, he just wanted to get rid of Burton. 58. AJ73 posted: 09.24.2019 - 3:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @57 That's the way I saw it too. Roush couldn't afford the unsponsored car when Burton was driving, but could with Edwards?! Hmmm... ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
