He had the fastest car on the track at the end of the race. 2. Darrell posted: 03.26.2006 - 5:49 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Ryan Newman was plagued by bad luck all week. He was leading the Winston Open by a large margin when his engine blew on the next-to-last lap, then he wins the pole for this race only to crash while leading. 3. michael posted: 03.27.2006 - 1:06 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) when ryan newman leads he crashed 4. He tore a ribcage muscle when he wrecked during qualifying. 7. BurtonRuddFan posted: 09.24.2007 - 1:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) What an exciting race. Many different leaders and it was good to see the 11 and 90 finish on the lead lap. 8. But at least Newman was able to lead a handful of laps first; Indy pole-winner Scott Sharp's race lasted a whopping quarter of a lap as he lost control of his machine heading into turn 1 after the start and ended up in the wall. 9. Spencer, running third, was able to take the lead after Gordon had to back off the throttle to avoid Newman. Atwood had a hard crash in the quad-oval and Bobby Labonte spun out of the lead just after 500 miles. 19. JLPMGHRS posted: 10.27.2010 - 8:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jeff Gordon was leading the race when the caution came out for Atwood's crash. He collided with Kenny Wallace on pit road which destroyed the right front fender of his car and ruined his race. As the person above me said, Gordon and Newman never touched. In fact, they were running completely different lines at the time of his crash, Gordon high and Newman low. 20. The five drivers eligible based on their top-5 finishes at Las Vegas earlier in the year were in order of finish in this race Dale Jarrett, Sterling Marlin, Johnny Benson Jr., Jeff Gordon and Todd Bodine with only Jarrett finishing in the top-10 and none placing in the top-5. Jarrett's team was going to have Jeff Green, who won the Busch race the day before this event, stand by in case DJ needed a relief driver from his qualifying crash (he spun and hit hard driver's side after a rear-first impact) but Jarrett told him not to as he was going to go the distance and he indeed did. 25. I think, if there had been better drivers in those cars, they would have shocked a lot of people that year. Not only that, but maybe they'd have been able to secure a big-time sponsor to replace Kmart. Unfortunately, after Kmart left, the team began a steep decline, culminating in its exit from full-time competition after 2003. 35. 18fan posted: 12.27.2016 - 10:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the last race Mike Skinner led for RCR and the last time he led double digit laps in a Cup race. 36. A few weeks after this race, Tara got her transplant. However, her story still ended tragically when she and her 2 sisters were killed in a wrong way crash by a drunk driver. Shawn, however, would go on to be crew chief for Dale Jarrett in 2003, and soon afterwards, married Deborah Renshaw, with whom he has 2 kids. 42. Mile501 posted: 01.23.2020 - 12:59 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I wonder how Mike Wallace felt about this race. After failing to qualify, he was still at the track when the race began, but left at some point to go to his nearby home. It was reported about halfway through the race that Kevin Lepage wasn't feeling well and was seeking a relief driver, but no one could be found. Finally, the team asked FOX to announce on their live broadcast that they were looking for Mike Wallace. His wife heard the announcement at their home and Wallace returned to the track in his firesuit, ready to go. But after all that, Lepage decided that he didn't want to get out of his car, and as far as I can tell, he finished the race and Mike Wallace returned to the track for nothing. 43. This situation is covered at 4 separate points during the broadcast (laps are approximate): Lap 206 (194 to go), 2:27 Lap 218 (182 to go), 2:33 Lap 236 (164 to go), 2:41 Lap 260 (140 to go), 2:51 Times are approximate and are according to Dave W's video of this race. 45. Unfortunately, he only ran 10 laps and crashed trying too hard to hold off Jeff Gordon for the lead in turn 4. 46.
