Then, in a moment of brilliance, Richard Childress teamed the pair. 2. And, of course, before he drove for Childress (imagine that, Kevin and Robby would be teammates!), Robby had the patience of A.J. Foyt (one of his former IndyCar bosses), so when he finally got beside him, he shoved him toward the side in retalliation. Meanwhile, Tony Stewart was laying back, anticipating such a maneuver, and he zipped past the 7 and the 29 and gave Harvick his lap back when Ron Fellows crashed. A few spinouts happened in the closing laps, and Harvick picked up several positions by just passing cars, so that's how he climbed up from near 30th to 14th. 5. biffle16 posted: 01.17.2007 - 11:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (6) Kevin Harvick and Robby Gordon are racing. Scott Pruett, Robby Gordon, Ron Fellows, and Boris Said all had fantastic runs for large portions of the race with Robby leading in the final laps. Robby and Ron combined to lead 40 laps and each managed to pass Jeff Gordon under green at least once. Boris Said recovered from an off-road excursion in turn 3 after contact with Brett Bodine and a subsequent spin in turn 7 off the Bodine car to claw his way into 11th. Pruett also made good on the promise he showed in the 2000 Sonoma event, staying in the top 10 for most of the day before finishing a respectable 12th for the recovering Joe Nemechek. However, Dorsey Schroeder could only manage a 25th place finish after an early spin while Brian Simo wound up stalling his Hills Bros. Ford on Sonoma's main straightaway for the second straight year when the transmission failed. 11. The track length changed from 1.949 miles to exactly 2 miles, but the lap distance was not altered until 2002. By 2002 the track length had changed again to 1.99 miles after the drag strip was no longer part of the frontstretch. 14. Overall a good year for him as he won the 24 Hours of Daytona overall earlier in the season. Mark Martin slid off the track in qualifying and had to pit on 'Gilligan's Island' because of it but rallied for a top-10. Dorsey Schroeder makes his final Winston Cup start, subbing for Jason Leffler in the #01 Dodge. The 1989 Trans-Am champion made nine Cup starts, including three on ovals, between 1991 and 2001. With Schroeder in his normal ride Leffler attempted the race in a third Ganassi car, a #04 Dodge painted identically to the #01, but missed the field. "You picked a fine time to leave me, Loose Wheel." Ron Hornaday Jr. lost the left-front tire on his AJ Foyt-owned Pontiac. The normally blue-and-white Georgia-Pacific machine was instead painted red-and-white for this race but for the life of me I don't know why, no one seems to have pictures of it. It may have been a co-sponsorship with bowling company Brunswick Corp., who worked with Jones before, but I couldn't make out the logo on a YouTube video. Jones' car was qualified for this race by road racer Tom Hubert. 17. Mile501 posted: 02.12.2020 - 1:55 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) I just finished watching this race on YouTube and I wanted to provide a little more clarification to some of the earlier comments. Robby Gordon drove a great race and was leading, pulling away from Jeff Gordon and Tony Stewart, with ~20 laps to go. Kevin Harvick made an unscheduled pit stop and came back out right with the leaders, fighting (probably too hard) to get his lap back. However, Harvick had been held 15 seconds for speeding on pit road. But Robby Gordon used up his car trying to keep Harvick behind him, and when the two made a bit of contact, Stewart took advantage and slipped by. A caution came out just after, and both drivers let Harvick have his lap back. The interesting part is, had Harvick not sped on pit road, he would have been comfortably on the lead lap and Robby Gordon probably would have won this race. Now back on the lead lap and with much fresher tires, Harvick was able to pick off quite a few positions in the closing laps. There were also quite a few spins in the last few laps that helped him too. ----- Earlier in the race, Bobby Hamilton found himself trying to stay on the lead lap ahead of Jeff Gordon, after having what I think was an ignition issue. Gordon told him he would give him his lap back if he let him go by. Hamilton did, but when the next caution flew, Gordon didn't let him get his lap back. Hamilton said, "that's what I get for being a nice guy." However, Hamilton later made up the lap when a well-timed caution flag came out after the leaders had made their final stop but Hamilton hadn't yet pitted. He also took advantage of the late-race spins and made it all the way back up to 15th, just behind Harvick. Kyle Petty, Kurt Busch, Dale Jarrett, Sterling Marlin, Johnny Benson, John Andretti, and Terry Labonte were all among those who spun during the last lap or two. Jarrett had a rough day all the way around, but Andretti and Labonte were both running around 10th. ----- Not known as being a road racer, Johnny Benson had an outstanding performance in this race. It was noted several times by FOX how pumped up his crew was by his strong performance. He ran around 6th-8th all day long until speeding on pit road during his final stop and then spinning in the closing laps. 29.
