So either way, he would have lost. 4. P. I was at the race, and vividly remember wanting Jr. to win, if only for the fact that we knew Bobby was too classy to tear up his stuff doing burnouts. lol Anyway, as Bobby crossed the line, Jr. puttered kinda quietly past our seats at the SF line, and pulled a U-turn at the end of pit road. I do believe that Benson also ran out of gas at the finish, like Red said. I was busy taking pictures. heh 10. kidracer posted: 03.03.2013 - 2:12 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I never knew how Benson made it on gas? And Blaney was the only car to run out of gas? 11. Labonte led the final 4 laps and won the race. He did not lead very early but he led the laps that counted. In a side note, that was my 14th birthday that day, Jeff Gordon taking over the points lead was a welcome sight as he took the lead and would win the Winston Cup title. 12. He led 121 of the first 159 laps but then lost it under the second-to-last caution. 16. Canadianfan posted: 01.12.2018 - 5:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @15 Just watched the later stages of the race. When the #88 caused the lap 159 caution everyone came to pit road. Most took fuel only or 2 tires Jeff's team went with 4 tires and was 2nd last off pit road and restarted 21st. After that his car developed an aero push and he could not really make up any ground. He was lucky to finish 8th before cars started running out he was 14th. 17. Jarrett went to the garage where his team took the whole front end off the car and were back out before the restart. However, soon after Jarrett blew a tire in turn 3 likely from something rubbing that the crew had overlooked in their haste to get the car back on track which ended his day and he never regained the points lead for the rest of the season 18. This I thought was the start of the downfall of DJ's prominence. 19. Anthony2 posted: 12.26.2019 - 7:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @18 I mean DJ finished 9th in points in 2002. Even Jarrett will tell you that 2002 was the last year he was ever competitive. In fact he even mentioned it on NASCAR America this year. 20. Yes 2003 he was garbage but he got back too at least being decent in those years. After then he fell off the cliff. 22. Mile501 posted: 12.26.2019 - 9:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @21 - It looks to me like DJ fell off the cliff after losing Todd Parrott as his crew chief at the end of the 2002 season. Jarrett won at Rockingham in early 2003 with Todd's brother, Brad, atop the pit box, but he had mixed results overall and Brad Parrott was released after just 8 races. Things got even worse in the 8 races after losing Brad Parrott. Jarrett had 5 DNFs, only 1 finish better than 20th, and 0 lead lap finishes. He dropped to 29th in points and stayed between 25th and 29th for the rest of the season, posting very inconsistent results. 23. To me his prime championship years were 1996-2001. However starting with this race most of the rest of 2001 was a disaster for Jarrett. He still ran great but had some horrible results. Watkins Glen he may have had the best car but got the dreaded wheel hop and got stuck in the sand. Kansas had one of the hardest wrecks of his career. Talladega got taken out in the big one. Once 2001 was over Jarrett was never a legit title contender again. 2002 he was still a threat to win a lot but no longer had the championship consistency he had the previous years and got 9th in points. 2003 despite the early win at the Rock was pretty much embarrassing. 2004 was overall a much better year despite not winning and yeah he almost made the chase but it was more like 2002 in that the championship level of consistency wasn't there. 2005 the better runs were coming fewer and far between but thankfully got his last hurrah at Talladega. 25.
