I don't remember a whole lot though. :( This was the only time Travis Carter Motorsports won two poles in a row. 5. J. The race didn't go as smoothly...Jarrett put it in the sand trap in turn 1 and ended up losing a lap waiting to get fished out. I thought only horrible luck like that could happen to Robby Gordon now, not then. It's such a shame when something like that happens, but when it involves something that has to do with television!?!? I still have to shake my head about that. At least he or his crew wasn't burned in the fire. Jeff Gordon had such a great drive at the end to chase down Jeff Burton, who was equally impressive as he is not know for his road course skills, to get the win. Hey, maybe if he and Tony Stewart didn't tangle the year before, this could have been an unprecedented fifth win in-a-row at Watkins Glen. Gordon and Mark Martin have are tied for the record with three wins in-a-row (Martin: 1993-95, Gordon: 1997-99) 6. Filling in for Buckshot Jones, it would have been his first race for the Pettys since 1994. I'm kind of surprised he tried this one as he was already an announcer for NBC at the time and they covered this race. 9. I'm surprised no one has responded to this comment informing us of how worthless Wally Dallenbach is as a human being. That unfortunately seems to be the only thing that happens after his name is brought up. 13. sk posted: 03.23.2011 - 6:05 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) also, gordon became the winningest road course driver in cup history here, breaking a tie with the king, bobby allison and rusty wallace. 14. Despite Gordon's road racing success he only finished in the top-10 once more at the Glen, a ninth in 2007. 17. RaceFanX posted: 11.12.2015 - 7:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Well that's a reversal of fortune... Jim Smith and his #7 team almost won at Sonoma with ringer Robby Gordon at the wheel but doesn't make the grid at Watkins Glen with regular driver Mike Wallace back at the wheel. 18. If I remember correctly, Wally was just trying to qualify the 44 like Tom Hubert did at Sonoma. Had the car made the race, Buckshot would likely have driven it in the race. 19. I disliked his driving but what horrible luck for Robby Gordon who almost certainly would have won if not for one of the strangest dnfs in history. Rusty Wallace's team messed up badly with the engine. Dale Jarrett gets incredibly lucky to have gotten the lap back and dug out from gravel twice. He deserved to finish last with one of the worst performances I've seen from a cup champion. Glad he didn't win the championship due to the safety workers and Jeff Burton making sure that the consequences for his bad driving was minimal. Bad mistake by Rudd in the esses against Gordon. Yates drivers both given great cars but blew it. Jarrett even tried to blame Martin for his error. So... Lots of errors in this one. Jeff Gordon takes advantage of others mistakes and bad luck. Gordon had a 5th place car this day. 20. Alex' posted: 03.19.2018 - 7:40 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #19 reads like something Chad *Knaus* would say... 21. Steve posted: 08.20.2020 - 3:27 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) This race was definitely Jarrett's best shot at winning on a road course. Jarrett never seemed to do well on road courses. He had a handful of good runs on them but never a real threat to win, except this race. New track record pole run and leading early before he wheel hopped it into the sand in turn 1. Most years at Watkins Glen there was either grass or asphalt there and it could've just been a minor setback but this was during a few year period where they had the sand traps and getting into it meant losing at least 1 lap getting out. Jarrett actually did get his lap back and was slowly coming back through the field when he looped it into the sand again later in the race and once again went a lap down. He definitely had the car to win on this day and it was his best shot ever at a road course win but it turned into a disaster much lime the entire second half of his 2001 season, after being so good in the first half. 24. Gordon finished 10th in 2010. 25. possum posted: 08.20.2020 - 6:45 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @23 - for safety's sake, they really should put the gravel traps back. ISC, putting profit ahead of safety, took the gravel traps out when the TV's complained it took too long to get cars out of them. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
