Late in the event, Harvick knocked Rudd nearly broadside coming out of turn two. Rudd made an amazing save, caught back up, and took the lead with a controlled bump in turn 3. 4. He was OK, but that was a pretty famous photo for a time. 5. most posted: 12.13.2006 - 3:08 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Wow, Had there been a chase Benson would have made it! 6. Anonymous, I believe that crash you referenced was earlier in the year in the Winston Open. Buckshot took a hard hit in that race. Last race for Eel River Racing, owned by Jack Birmingham, who recently passed away. 8. By '04, they were no longer active in Cup Series. Shame. They were great talents swallowed up by the youth movement. I hate Young Guns. 11. If I had the power to redo any year, it would be 2001. At least Dale wasn't here to see this mess. 12. I looked on YouTube, but I couldn't find anything. 13. Anonymous posted: 01.12.2009 - 9:18 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) People forget Rudd pushing Wallace out of the lead. And the Harvick deal had a lot to do with Harvick pushing up into Rudd coming off turn two. 14. He did, however, take Ron Hornaday with him, and Hornaday's front end was destroyed when he hit the side of Matt Kenseth. Hornaday was not pleased with Jones after the accident. Rick Mast and Jeff Green both cut tires and hit the wall simultaneously. Terry Labonte had a top 10 run going but had to pit under green for tailpipe problems. They failed to fix it properly, and just a few laps later, Labonte's tailpipes came out completely, he ran over them, cut a tire, and spun and crashed into the turn 1 wall hard. 17. His white car had blue numbers and highlights instead of red ones for this race as such. 18. It was considered a big deal at the time as no one had run that many special paints jobs tied together in one race before. While the promotion was a success and set the tone for future promotions with the Muppets and several rock bands having a Looney Toon on your car for this race proved to somewhat bad luck as most of them crashed. The special Hendrick Motorsports Looney Toon cars of Jeff Gordon and Terry Labonte both featured the special color changing "DuPont Chromolusion" paint. The Mac Tools sponsorship on Dave Blaney's car was a seperate one-off deal. The Bill Davis team was originally going to run the highlighted in red paint job at Bristol but it was moved back to Richmond after a practice crash at Bristol forced them to a backup car without the paint job. 19. A multi-car crash later sidelined the green #14 and left him with a finish no where near as good an indicator as how well he ran at the start. 20. chaser relator posted: 06.29.2013 - 5:35 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) had the current chase rules been implemented back in 2001 steve park woulda been that last wild carder for the 01 chase and woulda finished 12th in pionts despite missing the last third of the season.........denny hamlin would sure hate to know that lol 21. Chad posted: 03.20.2018 - 10:42 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Another great race in a great season. Highly recommend watching the last 40 laps on Youtube. Sterling Marlin showed at the start an example of how he was a step below the best in terms of talent. To drive it in that far out of your line at the start of a race, either he was deliberately trying to wreck Gordon or was not very bright. There was no reason to push it anywhere near as hard as would cause the car to run up the hill like that, at that point in the race. Not the only time he's done something like that. You didn't see Jeff Gordon making that sort of mistake. He seemed to love wrecking Gordon for some reason. Rudd seemed to let emotions get the best of him and ignore the big picture, though it paid off this time. Poor Rusty, another race that he could have won if not for better car adjustment choices late in the race. He was making the calls though... as a veteran you'd expect more. But like in other short track races around this time, he got unlucky with cautions and lapped traffic. Nice job by Gordon's team, getting an extra 20 points by getting the car back out. 26.
