Late in the event, Rudd side-swipped Wallace coming out of turn four while putting him a lap down. Wallace wasn't happy with that, so he put the bumper to Rudd going into turn four on the following circuit, spinning Rudd out and getting his lap back in the process. Rudd was somehow able to keep the car off the wall and come back for 3rd. As Wallace so eloquently put it after the race, "he pissed me off so I ran his ass over." 5. brandon posted: 03.11.2006 - 3:37 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) nascar officals had to break those two up after the race too. they came very close to a fist fight 6. mk17ce99 posted: 06.21.2006 - 12:28 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The special Flag Schemes that some of the drivers ran were really cool. Kenny Wallace is up there as well, and at least an honorable mention for Casey Atwood and Dave Blaney. 11. Jeff Gordon caused some controversy in this race when he and Ron Hornaday got together on the frontstretch while battling inside the top 10. Hornaday was turned around and got hit by Ward Burton, while Mark Martin and Johnny Benson tangled and crashed behind them. Michael Waltrip crashed just as the commentators were talking about how well he was running. 14. Waving of the white flag means to surrender and America never gives up. Very smart planning by NASCAR to make this a memorable race. 15. dalejunior16 posted: 07.02.2011 - 2:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (1) Fixed. 16. Aldo posted: 10.31.2011 - 4:28 am Rate this comment: (3) (1) I think that not waving the white flag is bullshit. This is just a car race and the white flag means "last lap". War is another thing. Just to be precise: America tries not to surrender but sometimes can happen as in Vietnam. I wish a world with no wars, no surrender, no victories, no victims, no color, just love and peace for everyone. =) 17. Michael Waltrip and the NAPA team dumped their regular paint all together and ran their Stars-and-Stripes scheme from the Pepsi 400 again in this race and every other race for the rest of the year. Sterling Marlin and the Ganassi #40 team wanted to run an all-American flag car in this race but couldn't due to the time needed to prepare the car (they had already prepared their Dover car). Instead they ran their patriotic car at Kansas in the next race. MBNA sponsored this race in honor of Major League Baseball's iron man Cal Ripken Jr. The Baltimore Orioles legend retired after the 2001 season and the race was originally to take place the same day as his final home game in Maryland, after 9-11 shuffled the baseball schedule that was no longer true. 18. Chad posted: 03.21.2018 - 5:09 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Jeff Gordon had an uncharacteristic really bad mistake taking out Hornaday. Behind him Mark Martin's aging reflexes took out the car in front of him just like the week before at Richmond. Also Dale Jr again taking others out through his poor driving. His own words says he wasn't a smooth driver at the time, which was mentioned by commentators during this race separate from the incident. He kept running into other cars in 2001. Funny that he ends up winning the thing and Gordon gets a top 5. Rusty Wallace... wow, dirty driver. Takes out the leader on purpose late in the race. Background: Rusty does the bump and run without apologies at Bristol to others. But Rudd did it to him at Bristol weeks earlier, and he took it personally, just like when Gordon did it to him. Wrecking the leader late in the race deliberately should have been grounds to make him sit out at least one race as punishment. I don't remember if Rudd paid it back afterwards. 28. Tarheel posted: 12.16.2018 - 5:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Lol at "Mark Martin's aging reflexes. He finished second in points the next year, and another seven years down the road won five races and finished second in points to Johnson who was winning his fourth title in a row. But I agree with the rest of your post. 29. Rob posted: 09.10.2019 - 2:10 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) To #21. Fatal crash happened at an area short track, not at Dover. 30. Watching it for the first time a few days ago made me realize that it was likely part of the healing process for NASCAR fans at least, but I may be wrong. I know it would've worked like that for me if I was there to see it live... Never forget 9/11 33. danny posted: 09.11.2020 - 2:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) I will never forget this very race I mean I had turned 9 then 9-11 happened and I was devastated that we had lost nearly 3,000 citizens and then this race and the crowd after the anthem played and they chanted usa usa, usa and you couldn't hear a pindrop when they ran the race or before they ran goosebumps to this day. America needed this race they needed that moment. What has happened this year a bit dissapointing with everything going on but you know this race had to unite us. Don't you think we need that now. 34.
