Carl Long's 29th place finish is his best. Major DNQ's as two Petty cars and two RCR cars fail to qualify. This was the last time that Richard Childress had just one car in a Cup race. 5. Blaise Alexander was killed in the ARCA race on Wednesday night when he and Kerry Earnhardt made contact coming to the checkered flag for the win and Blaise hit the dogleg wall head-on and then flipped over into the infield grass. Oddly enough, Stuart Kirby, who sort of disappeared until 2005, drove a car for legendary owner Bob Schacht. Bob Schacht's ARCA driver at the time, Deborah Renshaw, crashed into the driver's side door of Eric Martin's car at full speed in practice for the Charlotte ARCA race in 2002, killing him instantly. This was also the last time Jeremy Mayfield missed a Nextel Cup race until Watkins Glen 2006. 9. Darrell posted: 10.16.2006 - 10:47 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sort of ironic that Sterling won the race the weekend his former Busch teammate was killed. I remember the Martin wreck. A lot of people hate Renshaw for what happened, but wasn't Martin unbuckling his safety equipment when Renshaw struck him? 10. Both drivers actually finished 1-2, Earnhardt winning. I believe the crash with Deborah Renshaw (now married to former Mark Martin and Dale Jarrett crew chief Shawn Parker) is what prompted the caution lights in the ARCA cars, alerting the drivers that the yellow flag is out. 12. I remember when Eric Martin got killed, my local country station broke in and reported a driver got killed and for a while everyone thought it was Mark Martin and everyone flipped out. Then they apologized and said it was the ARCA guy, but that and Alexander crash (I don't remember that one) were enough to make everyone upset enough that they brought the safe walls in. Then the US invaded Afghanistan and no one expected that to happen until Monday, so it was rather a major surprise. NBC News broke in and covered Bush's speech and for a while they thought they would get back to Charlotte but they never did and went fast to TNT breaking in there. I remember nothing about the race besides Sterling winning. 29. huckhound14 posted: 03.09.2014 - 3:50 am Rate this comment: (0) (2) This race will forever be known for unleashing Jimmie Johnson upon us. 30. 88&4Fan posted: 07.07.2015 - 6:21 pm Rate this comment: (1) (2) Cup series debut of some nobody called "Jimmie Johnson". Travis Kvapil initially planned to drive #60 Addington Motorsports Chevy in this race. Those plans ended when the truck race at Texas was postponed to this weekend and Kvapil also wrecked the car testing here a few weeks earlier. Again, he intended to enter the race but wasnt on the entry list. 35. I remembered reading about some NASCAR Fans had backlash at the time about it at the time and thought NASCAR officials were wrong at the time. At the time, a lot of American didn't forget about September 11th yet and seeing the flag not being allowed on a victory lap bothered a good amount of people at the time. 37.
