The outside was the preferred groove that day, and once Burton was able to get the nose up there, he made the pass and cruised to victory. 2. It's a shame he entered the ride so late in the season, because things were definitely clicking. If he had entered towards the beginning or middle of the season, I'd bet Mike Wallace would have a Cup win right now. 7. mk17ce99 posted: 06.21.2006 - 12:31 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) This was the closest Matt Kenseth was to victory lane the entire 2001 season. 8. casey14 posted: 11.09.2006 - 12:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Atwood and Rusty Wallace rulled the first half of the race. Tire issues caused them to fall to the back of the pack, and Burton went on to win. 9. Anonymous posted: 05.30.2007 - 9:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Roger could have put Newman in the #02 and made that a full-time team. I never understood why Roger didn't keep Mike. He had top 10 runs going in almost every race, he just never had any luck. 12. Rusty posted: 07.14.2007 - 5:19 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Jeff Burton's last win until Dover in 2006. 13. That would've worked, but NO: we have to have young guns now, no old guys! Thanks, Mike Helton, for ruining the sport! 14. It really was a great race, but it was also one of the more underrated "Tire Debacle" races that have happened over the years. So many right front failures. 21. But while Mike's tires arguably held up better than anyone else's (he only took 2 new ones on his last pit stop, the only leader to do that), Kenny had TWO right-front failures that sent him to the back on separate occasions, and he still rallied to finish 11th. Scrub the tire issues from the race and we might have seen Mike, Herm and Rusty all fighting for top-5s by the end. 26.
