Joe Nemechek dominated from there. 2. Miller4Prez64 posted: 07.07.2006 - 4:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) A neat top 6, none of these drivers do anything in cup anymore except for Dale Jarrett. 3. One of many times that the Golden Boy unnecessarily crashed people that year. I wonder what excuses the Jr worshipers would come up with if this had happened today? Just another chapter in the "Stupid mistakes" file of Dale Jr's career. It's like he has ADHD or something. He just can't focus. 5. It was the closest Herman came to winning in the Cup ranks since his 2nd place finish at Talladega the previous fall. In that race, Kenny trailed Dale Earnhardt on the final lap and likely would have made a move for the win had he not focused on blocking the unfamiliar-looking car behind him. This car, as it turned out, was running a special paint scheme as a one-off deal. The driver? Joe Nemechek. 7. Spen posted: 09.27.2017 - 9:45 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) By posting the seventh fastest lap time. Seriously, back in the days of one-lap qualifying and random draw orders, cars that were usually somewhat off-pace could catch a lucky wind, or the perfect track temperature and end up starting higher than normal. Heck, Dave Marcis himself qualified fifth at Dover as late as '97. Unfortunately, the current rules have essentially destroyed the possibilities for underdogs to start well, ensuring boring races with less passing. 29. Mile501 posted: 09.28.2017 - 9:15 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) #28 - I have been pondering a theory to that end, wondering if group qualifying has helped the better cars start up front and ultimately lead to less passing, but I haven't quite been able to figure out how to find evidence to support the idea. 30. Ultimate Warrior #18 posted: 09.28.2017 - 11:13 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Idk if the qualifying format has made for less passing but it has made qualifying more boring and more predictable. The old format which @27 talked about did have a lot of unpredictable things such as cloud cover or late draw the track temp would be 20-30 degrees cooler so that was always a advantage to go late. I think starting fields would be more interesting under the older format with today's starting grid but not as wild as the late 90's to mid to late 00's. 31. Mile501 posted: 09.28.2017 - 11:17 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) The other thing with the new format is that a driver gets multiple attempts to have a good lap. Under the old format, a good driver might simply have a bad lap and start deeper in the field, thus creating more passing during the race as he worked his way forward. Now, a driver who has a bad lap can just run more laps. 32. Chad posted: 03.29.2018 - 4:13 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A lot of good points covered here. Jr wrecking another car as he did so often in 2001. The caution catching out most of the field, combined with such a long green flag run, put most of the field out of contention. And the qualifying in 2001 being a lot more random than now... was a lot better in 2001 in that format. For that last long green run. It wasn't that Nemechek had a really dominant car. If there was another caution or two in the second half of the race, it could have been a really close battle. The top ten cars were extremely equal in performance. Even Stewart or Jarret could have won it if there were a few extra cautions bunching up the field a few times. Bad break for Kurt Busch... had a good chance of winning until engine trouble late in the race. Was the quality of drivers higher than ever in 2001? Because so few wrecks, despite having less advanced engineering knowledge at designing cars to handle as precise as possible. You had a few exceptions. Earnhardt Jr and Spencer both would take out an opponent many times this season each. Robby Gordon had his moments of idiocy. But look at the plate tracks for example. Talladega came very close to having no wrecks in either race. It was Bobby Labonte's uncharacteristically idiotic move on the last lap of the EA Sports 500 that messed it up. This despite having the insanely dangerous high drag plate package, that made them running constant 3-4 wide at Talladega. And at other tracks, very few dumb wrecks. Whatever Nascar had in rules package in this season, you wish they'd pay some engineers to analyse this and figure out how to make it this competitive again. Because you had small teams at front one race, at back another, then at front another race. Unlike today. The racing in 2001 was the goose with the golden egg. But Nascar blew it. Ruined the chance to become the clear second greatest motorsports competition in world history for decades into the future. 33.
