Then Sterling getting outta the car to fix the fender under the red. Man, a race I'll never forget. 2. That was crazy. 3. Heather posted: 02.08.2005 - 6:29 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Who'd thunk, with victory within his grasp, that Marlin would get outta the frickin' car under caution! LOL 4. Brett posted: 02.25.2005 - 10:56 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) I remember the announcers spending plenty of time specifically saying that Sterling wouldn't get out of the car, aware that he'd be penalized if he'd get anywhere near the car. Well, I'm guessing Sterling was never the brightest bulb around. :) Anyway, the biggest race of the year turns into the weirdest race of the year in the final laps, as Kevin Harvick and Jeff Gordon get together to cause the big one on lap 148. Then Gordon and Marlin's incident going for the lead. Then Marlin's Darwin Award winning move. THEN on the ensuing restart, a multi-car crash that sends Mikey Waltrip into the pit area, about five feet from wrecking the pace car...and he still finishes 5th. Finally, Ward Burton scores the upset win, with Geoff Bodine taking an nearly improbable 3rd. 5. Marcis ran a special silver Realtree car for his sendoff, perhaps the only driver to deliberately retire from Cup after the Daytona 500 as opposed to the end of the year (Like Richard Petty, Cale Yarborough, Darrell Waltrip, Rusty Wallace and Ricky Rudd all did). Future 500 winner Kevin Harvick makes his first-ever Daytona 500 start, he led the race but it still didn't go well as he helped trigger the big one. Jimmie Johnson starts his first race as a Cup regular from the pole but does not led a lap. Johnson hasn't missed a race, to date, since this event. 53. From then on, the lightning bolts have been some sort of part of every UPS paint scheme since. * Andy Petree's was on the rocks in 2002, the 33 was driven by Mike Wallace and Bobby Hamilton's team did not seem have the spark it had in 2001 both were sponsored by new sponsors, 1 time sponsor Autolivon the 33 and Schneider Electric on the 55, the 33 went through a lot of sponsors including Carrot Top and 1800 Call ATT. 54. Now the cars are built like tanks, they can ram into things and not do much damage. 97. @94 posted: 01.02.2020 - 3:01 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Totally agree. Those that are calling it "stupid" or "crazy" just want to bash that guy but look like idiots themselves. The guys car is badly damaged and he's going to have to pit from the lead anyway. If he pulls it out a bit and its fine that's the same thing as him pitting and having his team fix it. But at least with the former Nascar has to make the call to pull him out of the lead. 98. possum posted: 01.02.2020 - 7:03 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @94 - actually, Marlin had everything to lose, specifically the race. The fender wasn't that badly damaged, he would most likely have been able to continue and pit when everyone else did. The mistake he made was to give a little tug to fender to see how badly it was bent. Had he kept his hands off and just looked at it, he wouldn't have been guilty of "working on the car". @95 - agree. There's nothing weird in saying you can't continue to play the game during a timeout, it's the same in every sport. 99. @98 posted: 01.03.2020 - 1:25 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) No one else pitted in the lead group and his tire was smoking heavily every time the car loaded the right front: https://youtu.be/uReHeukWilI?t=12191 He was going to need to pit. 100. I still remember the look on Sterling's face in the interview after he got caught tugging the fender. I also still remember Michael Waltrip nearly crashing the pace car out after the stackup on the last caution, which is very ironic given that Ward crashed out of the 1997 edition of the Pepsi 400 (an event at the same track) arguably because of a stackup. I wonder how the pace laps could have gone down without a pace car. 103. possum posted: 01.03.2021 - 6:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @102 - NASCAR keeps a spare pace car on hand for just such an emergency. I can recall two cases where they might have used it (both many years ago), once when the regular pace car ran out of gas, and once when the pace car was just sitting at the turn 1 end of pit road, and an accident on the front stretch sent a car crashing into it. 104. Benny Parsons was the pre-race show's only analyst. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
