But that quickly fell apart, as he recorded 4 finishes worse than 20th in the next 5 races and could never recover, relegating him to 8th at the end of the season. 24. Anonymous posted: 04.04.2019 - 9:16 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) It appears that the reason Ron Hornaday drove the #49 in this race was because Shawna Robinson was put on "probation", according to the Reddit AMA she did two weeks ago. https://www.reddit.com/r/NASCAR/comments/b3hm6g/hello_everyone_this_is_shawna_robinson_former/eizttbv/ 30. ScottB posted: 04.04.2019 - 12:49 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Interesting. I don't recall anything about NASCAR putting her on probation, I would assume it was a team "probation" where BAM was thinking about replacing her, but not ready to make a final decision. The two attempts before this race were a DNQ and crash, so it would make sense that BAM could have been going in that direction. An engine failure in this one race with Hornaday at the wheel ended the day early, but there wasn't really a dramatic improvement in speed up to that point. After this week Robinson got one more shot with BAM at Daytona (where BAM had picked up a decent finish in the 500 to start the season), but a mechanical DNF ended that. And then she was gone for good from BAM. Really, no one stood out in the #49 car until Ken Schrader started elevating the results to mid-pack. It's a tribute to how good he was. I wish Robinson had been less evasive in her answer. If there is more to the story, I'd like to know. 31. Knaus had been encouraging him to get into the pit box hard, and he slid through the box costing him 10 spots under green. Jimmie then said that Chad "never told me to get into the pit box hard again." 33. But was he really a good replacement for Atwood? I mean Mayfield didnt really run well until 2004. 35. Mile501 posted: 11.08.2020 - 1:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @34 - No, he was not. Atwood really should have had more time in the #19, considering (even as a rookie with a new team) he legitimately contended for 3 wins during the second half of the 2001 season (Loudon, Phoenix, Homestead). 36. Onion posted: 11.08.2020 - 2:19 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @34 What 33rd are you talking about? Mayfield was 24th in points after this race. But compared to Attwood, who never really ran well unless you go back to his rookie Busch season, yes. Absolutely a good replacement. He went on to win races and made the Chase. Attwood meanwhile didn't manage to improve on David Stremme's results in the car he got a second chance in. @35 I'm not sure if you have the best car for the first half and disappear from the top 10 with 100-120 to go, tire problems or not, constitutes as legitimately contending for a win. And for sure it doesn't count if you stay out and lead 13 at 2/3 distance in a race you are running 10th-15th in. Because that's what Attwood actually did in Loudon. He only truly contended for one win that year, Homestead, where Evernham had a setup so good it even made Larry Foyt of all people run in the top 15. I'll never get why people insist on Atwood being so great when he had roughly 1 good race per 20 starts. He was a Joe Nemechek-caliber driver that got hyped to extreme heights, then got f**ked and people just seem to have went with him being this great talent out of pity. 37. Mile501 posted: 11.08.2020 - 2:32 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @36 - Atwood, a rookie, contended for those wins with a team that Mayfield, a veteran, struggled with for 2 years after. That's no small feat, especially in the ultra-competitive 2001 season. I'm aware of all the circumstances you mentioned, but Atwood still contended for more wins in 2001 than Mayfield did in 2002. At Loudon, for example, had Atwood not gotten burned by the caution coming out right after he pitted, he probably would have contended for that win down to the finish. 38. Onion posted: 11.08.2020 - 7:23 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) In Loudon, Atwood was 15 laps off sequence, that's it. It makes little sense to suggest he'd have contended for a win, as he didn't have enough fuel to make it without multiple cautions and rejoined as the last car on the lead lap before the caution, which ended up saving him from going a lap down. I know being 13th on merit is good by his standards, but only by his standards. And don't know why you keep suggesting Mayfield was a step back. He too contended for the odd win (Vegas) as much as Casey in 2002 and did MUCH better in 2003. 39. Mile501 posted: 11.08.2020 - 9:33 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @38 - No, Atwood had plenty of fuel to make it to the finish at Loudon when he pitted with less than 70 laps to go. That's precisely why he likely would have contended for the win had pit stops cycled all the way through. I do think Mayfield was a step back, because Atwood seemed to be showing so much improvement in late 2001 that I feel like he would have done much better than Mayfield in 2002. As it was, it took the team another year and a half before Mayfield was running up front regularly. I think that would have happened more quickly had Atwood remained in the #19. Of course, it's just speculation, since we'll never know for sure. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ *Post a comment:* Your comment may not appear immediately - all comments must be approved by the moderator.
