Electing to take two tires and the lead late in the 2002 event, Rusty pulled away on the restart and looked to be on the verge of finally ending his misery, unfortunately it wasn't to be. 8 laps from the end "Awesome Bill" skillfully overtook Rusty in turn 3 and cruised home to wrap up the third win Brickyard win for car owner Ray Evernham. 5. Awesome Bill My favorite driver and Rusty my twin brothers favorite driver and Bill beat him that day. Bill Weber said it perfect when Bill climb out of the car and said Weber said "People questioned that this man was tired!" Weber then asked Bill in victory lane where this win ranked among all his victories and Bill said "This is the Greatest!!". As a HUGE fan of Awesome Bill from Dawsonville, this was my favorite NASCAR moment!! What a Day!! 11. His all-time favorite driver was Rusty Wallace, which is odd cause most of us pull for our Indiana boys. Grandpa's wake was taking place as the race was going on, and I was having trouble handling it so I kept "going out to smoke". I was pulling so damn hard for Rusty Wallace to win, since it would have meant so much on that day. I heard the end of the race in the car smoking, and was so let down. When I went back inside, somebody asked who won the race. I knew everyone else was pulling for Rusty like I was, so I did the only thing I had the heart to do: I lied and said I didn't hear the end, but Rusty was leading towards the end. That little white lie put a smile on a lot of faces, if only for a few minutes. Just thought I'd share that. 12. Also - as a big Bill fan it was "awesome" to watch (chuckle). I do remember that Dale Jarrett was the first car off pit road but was called back in for a violation (catch can or a wrench - can't recall exactly). Bill mentioned post race the 88 was running pretty darn good and he might not have had time to run both the 2 and 88 down. Sometimes it is just your day! Jim 13. I remember DJ cursing at his team over the scanner saying something like, "God damn it guys...give me a bottle a freaking water." Jarrett was slowly gaining on that red #9 before the caution and had he gotten out front, even with two tires, I think DJ would have a third or fourth (1998 running out of fuel while leading at halfway) Brickyard 400 win. 14. This was an absolute phenomenal race, as long as you're a Bill Elliott fan like I am. Bill completely dominated this race and went on to take the checkered flag in one of the Brickyard's biggest upsets -- along with my other favorite driver Jamie McMurray in 2010 and also last season with Paul Menard. Another great thing about this race was Bill and Rusty Wallace battling throughout the race and finishing 1-2 -- Bill and Rusty used to be a tremendous rivalry and I consider it to be one of the best rivalries in NASCAR. I remember watching this race with my late grandmother and both of us were so excited and cheering so loud -- it was definitely a monumental day for Bill fans like me and my grandmother. 16. murb posted: 06.30.2015 - 7:32 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) I always seem to forget just how big of a piece of shit move Spencer wrecking Kurt Busch was. Kurt made a clean pass and then Spencer just ran him over at about 175-180 mph. Zero class. 17. His car was absolute dominate in this race ... so happy seeing him win this race, adding another marque race to his already legendary career. The battle with him and Rusty at the end was fantastic ... an all-time classic race. 20. cheeri posted: 01.13.2017 - 2:34 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Kurt Busch got what he deserved. He had a lot of balls acting the way he did, and Jimmy Spencer is not somebody you mess with. Kurt is probably one of the biggest assholes ever to drive a stock car. He's a part of the early 00s wave of "young guns" who think they are God's gift to NASCAR and they could do whatever they want. I laughed and still laugh to this day when Jimmy Spencer punched him in the face. You can't defend Kurt Busch bumping/spinning people and then bitch and cry when somebody like Jimmy Spencer retaliates. It doesn't work that way. 21. NestieTheKid posted: 01.13.2017 - 2:55 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) @20 I beg to differ. Jimmy Spencer blatantly dumped Kurt Busch at Phoenix in 2001 for no other reason than he felt Kurt, a rookie, wasn't justified in racing him hard. In retaliation, Kurt muscled Jimmy Spencer out of the way for his first career win at Bristol. In retaliation for THAT, Spencer dumped Kurt at 200+ mph. Kurt Busch stood up for himself and showed he was not going to just be bullied on the racetrack and that he wasn't afraid of Jimmy Spencer, NASCAR's resident bully. I admire him for that. To this day people know not to hit Kurt Busch on the racetrack. NASCAR is better off without Jimmy Spencer. He was just a bully who cheated to get two wins, and destroyed his career by getting into it with Kurt Busch. 22. chevyfan98 posted: 01.13.2017 - 4:22 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Nobody deserves to be punted into the wall at 200 mph. Period. The only thing Kurt ever did wrong to Mr. Excrement was try to cut his tires at Michigan in 2003, which was well after this, and, frankly, he had it coming to him after being a total jackass to Kurt for two years. 23. I thoroughly enjoyed his meltdowns with Penske and Finch. He always been a punk. 25. chevyfan98 posted: 07.19.2017 - 2:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Racing a guy hard to get your first career win qualifies as disrespect? Yeah, we all know if the tables had been turned that Spencer would've tried to pass him totally cleanly... not. I thoroughly enjoy knowing that Kurt Busch is a cup series champion while Mr. Excrement has a grand total of zero cup wins without asterisks next to them. 26. 1995 Subaru WRX Sti posted: 07.19.2017 - 3:30 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Jimmy Spencer is one of the biggest hypocrites too EVER step foot in a Cup car. Things he has done too other (Kurt Busch) he has complained about others doing. Spencer has no room too talk at all. If roles were reversed at BMS in 2002, Spencer would have dumped Busch for the win and yes he would have. Busch played the game better then he did and Spencer lost. Spencer also dumped Busch at one of the fastest parts of the track. If it wasn't for the increased safety of the cars and wall, Busch would have been hurt. It really amazes me that people defend Spencer when he doesn't deserve defending at all. 27. Jimmy felt it was ok to ruff up young guys he would of absolutely dumped Busch at Bristol if the roles were reversed. Jimmy's real frustration comes from the fact he knew that 2002 was his last opportunity in decent equipment in cup as he was a 40+ year old guy at the time and being one of the weaker Vets during NASCAR's first youth movement era. 28. 02Justin10 posted: 07.15.2018 - 12:46 pm Rate this comment: (0) (2) Ahh. 50 cars for 43 positions. Bill had a solid 2002 two but it unraveled at the end of that season for some reason. Bill seemed to have horrible luck at the end of race seasons. It cost him championships in 1985 and 1992. Regardless of what some people try to say about him having a shot in '87, the end of season stretch killed his chances at those two championships and really wasn't any fault of his. Bill should have had close to 80 wins and three championships, but somehow had the worst luck of a driver I've ever seen. He was still my favorite driver though... 31.
