He still ended up with a 6th, but he would've won. 7. Steve posted: 02.27.2008 - 9:55 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Newman was on FIRE! 8. Sterling had a great car and had the best car in the field for most of the day but on a restart with 40 to go he missed a shift and never got back in the top three. 9. Sterling leads the most laps for the second straight race, followed by Tony Stewart, leading the second most in both races. 11. Robby Gordon took both road races and Jeff Gordon took Martinsville and Jimmie Johnson took both New Hampshire races. Ryan Newman dominated the intermediates and blew up in some others but he still won on gas mileage but he had almost as many DNFs as he had wins. Roush Racing dominated the intermediates, all resources went to Kurt Busch and Matt Kenseth as Mark Martin and Jeff Burton were terrible. NASCAR's over 40-crowd took a beating in 2003 but Dale Jarrett scored his only win in the spring Rockingham race and Ricky Craven scored an epic Darlington win the spring and Terry Labonte won his second Southern 500 win 23 years after his first in 1980. Bill Elliott scored his final win at North Carolina in the final fall event and was on his way to a second victory at Homestead when he tire blew in the final turn. Terry's brother Bobby scored two wins at Atlanta in the spring and Homestead in the fall benefitting from Elliott's tire. I found this year to be pretty lackluster as all the top teams were flexing their muscles, the only single car team to win a race was Ricky Craven at Darlington. 14. Brett Bodine had to be helped from his car after the hard hit by both the paramedics and his brother Todd Bodine who stopped his car and came to help. Bodine's hit was a hard one, the #11 Hooters Ford hit the outside wall off Turn 2 and then accelerated full throttle into a tire barrier on the inside of the track. 24. dennyfan05 posted: 01.11.2020 - 8:26 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) Previous Winners: Jeff Gordon 62 Rusty Wallace 54 Bill Elliott 43 Mark Martin 33 Dale Jarrett 31 Ricky Rudd 23 Terry Labonte 21 Bobby Labonte 20 Geoff Bodine 18 Jeff Burton 17 Tony Stewart 16 Sterling Marlin 10 Dale Earnhardt Jr 8 Kyle Petty 8 Matt Kenseth 7 Kurt Busch 6 Ward Burton 5 Jimmie Johnson 4 Ken Schrader 4 Michael Waltrip 3 Jeremy Mayfield 3 Kevin Harvick 3 Joe Nemechek 3 Ryan Newman 3 Ricky Craven 2 Steve Park 2 Jimmy Spencer 2 Derrike Cope 2 Jamie McMurray 1 Elliott Sadler 1 Robby Gordon 1 Johnny Benson Jr 1 25. rm posted: 03.29.2020 - 9:56 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Geoff Bodine relieved brother Brett for the weekend in what turned out to be the final race that Brett's team qualified for. While Geoff was nowhere close to mixing it up for the win here, he had kept his car clean and on the track until he broke a rear gear after a round of green flag pitstops. With the car smelling like "it was cooking the wings!" according to Geoff, he pulled the car in for the day shortly thereafter. Hooters wouldn't return to sponsor a Cup car until a one-off with Roush-Fenway Racing and Greg Biffle in 2016. 26. KYWildcat42 posted: 03.30.2020 - 6:20 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) @25 And I remember correctly, Geoff Bodine drove the number 11 Hooters ford up in the top 20. Giving the team its best run in over a couple years until pulling it off the track which went unnoticed on the broadcast. 27. rm posted: 03.30.2020 - 9:41 am Rate this comment: (0) (0) No, he was actually hanging around in the back most of the day, I think he only hit the top 20 when the green flag pit stops started. The team's efforts also weren't unnoticed by the FOX team on the broadcast, they interviewed a wounded Brett before the race and also acknowledged Geoff's mechanical issue when they spotted him turning into the garage. They then interviewed Geoff after he got out of the car, which is where the above quote came from. 28. rateus posted: 03.31.2020 - 5:42 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Brett Bodine's accident happened in final practice, after he had qualified 27th, so he should be listed as a driver change - not sure if the 'To the Back' entry for Geoff also needs updating as it's safe to say the back-up car was needed. https://www.toledoblade.com/sports/2003/06/15/Brett-Bodine-Double-whammy/stories/200306150031 29. Darrell posted: 10.01.2020 - 4:44 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) According to his recent Scene Vault podcast, Brett Bodine stated that the real reason the 11 withdrew from the race was because they had run out of tires. He gave the team the directive to run until they ran out, and while Geoff was running in the top 15, team members tried to persuade Brett to change his mind and try to run on the end. However, Brett stood his ground, as the team's finances (as well as his own personal) were completely dried up at that point. 31. possum posted: 10.01.2020 - 6:51 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @30 - that's a credible story, and Brett undoubtably made the wise decision. Yes, the could have kept going using scuffs for the last 80 laps, but on old tires they'd probably have lost a couple of laps, and ended up finishing only 3 or 4 spots higher than they did - which would have been worth only a couple of hundred in prize money, so not worth doing. 32. Mile501 posted: 10.02.2020 - 3:09 pm Rate this comment: (2) (0) The last two comments aren't quite right, as far as where the #11 was running in this race. Geoff Bodine was doing a solid job filling in for Brett, but he was running back in 26th when that cycle of pit stops began. If he was briefly shown in the top 15, it was only because many other drivers pitted before he did. He did not realistically have a shot at anything near a top 15 finish. Meanwhile, their other brother Todd almost got his best finish of the season, but he got loose in between two cars and hit the wall after a late-race restart. Other notes: - Bill Elliott was running around 10th, but pitted just before the 6th caution came out and got trapped a lap down. - Ricky Craven ran as high as 2nd until getting some damage in a late-race incident. - Despite finishing 1st and 2nd at Michigan in 2002, Dale Jarrett's car was terrible all race long. He didn't finish 32nd due to a problem; he just ran that poorly. 33. possum posted: 10.02.2020 - 7:38 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) @32 - not sure why you say my comment isn't "quite right"? Certainly Bodine could have kept running using scuffs; I think it very unlikely he would have finished any better than 36th had he done so, 3 places ahead of his actual 39th place finish; the difference in prize money for 36th is $200...what's not quite right? 34. Mile501 posted: 10.02.2020 - 8:05 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) @33 Possum - Sorry, I should have worded that better. I meant that the part about Geoff running in the top 15 (in the comment before yours) was not accurate. 35.
