Looked like he'd used his stuff up but I guess in reality he was just cooling his tires to come at Newman with all he had, and that's what he did. That was just a cool night. First with RC taking the 3 car out and doing the burnout on the front stretch and then Tony's night, I enjoyed the race a lot. 2. I think Ryan Newman had a flat tire (fortunately it was with about 65 laps to go, so he was within his pit window) and had to pit early, and Tony Stewart was able to pit later and catch him with fresh tires. This was Christian Fittipaldi's last NA$CAR start. He now races for Eddie Cheever's Rolex Sports Car team. What sucked about this race is that NBC showed the "unofficial results" while Tony was doing his burnout, and they didn't even interview one driver. Is it that much trouble? 4. Vickers would replace Joe Nemechek in the #25 Hendrick car for the final 4 races of the season. 7. BON GORDON posted: 02.02.2012 - 1:53 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) A very emotional race. RC takes the famous #3 on the race track and while the pace car is on the track Jeff Gordon pulls alongside the #3 car and rides around for a few laps. Jeff Gordon had a special paint scheme which celebrated Winston Cup's final season and Jeff Gordon's 4 championships as did the #3. Every NASCAR champion from 1972-2003 had a special car. 8. Richard, not having driven a Cup car before a crowd since 1981, had a lot of fun with it and pulled the black #3 Chevrolet out in front of the field a ways before doing a short victory-style burnout in front of the crowd just before the start-finish line. Childress was the only person to do that in one of the Victory Lap cars, it's probably the only time in NASCAR history anyone did a burnout like that before a race either. 9. Tony Stewart was doing victory donuts as NBC was doing the final results so they were probably just pressed for time. 13. Interestingly, only fans with Cingular Wireless cell phones could participate over cell. This race's poll question was "Which driver has the best chance to catch Matt Kenseth in the Points Standings? A-- Kevin Harvick (25%) B-- Dale Earnhardt Jr. (34%) C-- Ryan Newman (19%) D-- Nobody Will Catch Him (22%) 19. Stewart had none of it though, and actually said something in victory lane about how finally a fast car won and not the gas mileage garbage. I think 2002-2003 was the era of the hard tire compound that rarely wore out during races, so teams like Newman who found something with gas mileage really exploited it. 22. rm posted: 03.31.2020 - 8:56 pm Rate this comment: (1) (0) Elliott Sadler crashed out hard for the third race in a row. On the heels of his famous flip at Talladega and a catastrophic & fiery right front tire blowout at Kansas, Sadler went head-on into the quadoval wall on this night. Sadler came up on the slower car of Todd Bodine in turn 3 & 4 and got Bodine aero-loose, with Bodine finally losing control coming out of the corner. Sadler took evasive action to the inside as Bodine spun, but Bodine got the quarter panel of Sadler's car and sent him directly into the wall. Mark Martin was just behind the pair and missed t-boning Sadler by inches - actually, probably way less than inches - before Sadler slammed into the non-SAFER barrier-lined wall. Sadler was okay, but instead of a top ten he wound up last. 23. JSPorts posted: 03.31.2020 - 9:08 pm Rate this comment: (0) (0) Sadler had some bad luck as far as crashes were concerned. He had some wild flips, as well as some really hard hits (his Talladega flip and Pocono crash come to mind as examples of these.) 24. It was a fun week, coming down south and seeing the track up close for the first time. I was pulling for the army based cars, driven by Bodine and Skinner. They were having great runs going until they caught up in separate crashes. I was disappointed, but still had a great time. 25.
